Red Bull Racing seamless gearbox

Post

On Renault blog one of the guys mentioned that during recent test RBR started using seamless gearbox. Does anyone know if they bought Renault's seamless gearbox or made their own?

Red Bull Racing are considering bringing forward the introduction of their seamless shift gearbox to the Spanish Grand Prix, providing tests next week at Barcelona are successful.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit had originally pencilled in the system to be run for the first time at June's Canadian Grand Prix, but with dyno tests at the factory being so successful, there is a chance it could be brought in before then.

The team are hoping to give the seamless shift gearbox a run out in next week's major test at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Providing the test delivers good enough results, in terms of performance and reliability, then the green light will be given for it to be raced for the first time at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Team principal Christian Horner told autosport.com: "It's (the seamless shift's) introduction is very much dependent on its success at the test. If the test goes well and we make good progress then we could race it in Spain."

Red Bull Racing's increased efforts with the seamless shift come with their motorsport advisor Helmut Marko insisting that the team must ramp up their work to make the most of the speed shown by the RB3 so far this year.

"Apart from Spyker, all the teams are driving with continuously variable transmission," Marko said in an interview with Red Bull's website. "We have to re-tighten this by Barcelona, because it costs us time with every change of gear and acceleration.

"Apart from that the aerodynamics are being completely reworked - not because the ones used before were an aberration but because the second stage of expansion was always planned to happen around this time."

With poor reliability in the first three races of the year having cost the team championship points, Marko says that a new quality-control system has been put in place at the team to prevent repeated trouble in the future.

"From now on, every detected defect has to be reported to the factory within two hours. The senior designer has to offer a solution within a day. The defect has to be eliminated within three days. Without exception."

Marko added: "Red Bull's philosophy is this: We're not satisfied with 12th place. We'd rather risk something; (we) don't like to bundle all our resources into the development of reliability. (We) are (also) working on the advancement of speed at the same time."

Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

I think so...I dont know if STR has it...but the technology for it is expensive and costly to get it right..case in point look at BMW at the start of its season..they had many problems with theres

I'm assuming the Red Bull new transmission is their own design. The time frame seems correct, it's time to integrate all the planned go-fast parts into the Newey designed chassis as quickly as possible.
Right now Red Bull are going through the tough times of development, witha lot of mechanical failures. But once they solves and eliminate the problems one by one, we shall see a very quick car.

Rs do a search on this subject on this site and you can see all the info about the seamless shift gearbox and please make posts that are relevant and not for the sake of getting a higher post count.. Tomislavp4 just thought the seamless was a CVT which is okay because he is learning

'This post was made earlier' or 'This post is a repeat' etc..what was that then? a very relevant post? i think you re trying to stack yur account of posts by such unwanted posts...plz stop it and let other ppl live and post freely..your advice is not required..thank you

Hey! Please read the article. Tomislavp4 was quoting RBR guy!
Helmut Marko wrote:Apart from Spyker, all the teams are driving with continuously variable transmission," Marko said in an interview with Red Bull's website.
That is VERY strange statement since CVT is banned. Seamless shifting gearbox is not CVT but classic gearbox with gears and special mechanisms that allow seamless change of gears.

Its crazy to think RB are just using it now and yet Mclaren had a similar system in testing of 03 with the double clutch mp4-18A, and BAR introduced theirs in 2004. with the 006 I believe ?

Well they certainly had it throughout 05, was it them and Mclaren the only teams at the time to have it.

The majority of modern Formula One cars use seven-speed semi-automatic gearboxes. Regulations stipulate at least four forward gears, up to a maximum of seven. All cars must also have a reverse gear. Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT) systems are not allowed and cars may have no more than two driven wheels.
