McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Really? Neither of these two are engineers. I don't see why a driver would have a better technical understanding than an engineer. Just my two cents, but there are plenty on this forum with a better technical understanding of f1 cars than most f1 drivers.
I still think a driver inside a team has a better understanding of what's going on aero-wise then any of us. We are talking about drivers with a huge commitment to their teams; they are pretty much involved and probably will have the proper knowledge.

We have a lot of wise and smart people around here, but f1 drivers can be generally be assumed to be too, and they have inside information on their cars. They've seen windtunnel and cfd numbers, on-track data, setup variables etc. It would be rather foolish to believe any normal engineer outside a team has a better aero understanding of a specific car, then the person driving it.

They have had many front wing specs this year already.

Changes on the front wing; second element seems to have a curve to it the third element (on the inside section with 4 elements follows this curve). The 3rd and 4th element are vastly different in both shape and profile of the wing with the inside wing tips following a very different line. The upper element cascade isn't as wide as before and a new vertical turning vane on the front wing has been added. Also the small element just behind the upper cascade element looks to have been redone.

Front brake ducts; re-profiled inner section that is against the wheel with the lower element shaped differently.

New floor next to the sidepods looks to have differently profiled edges where there are some vertical lips.

Might be me but it looks like the sidepods have been re-shaped.

New vortex generator/air conditioner in front of the rear tyre.

New rear upper suspension arm with re-shaped mushroom.

New diffuser.

If this can't be called a big change then I don't know what can.

*edit* I also on the front wing on the inner arch on the first element main plane there is a little lip on the outside edge of the arch. These help generate vortices around the front tyre.

Red-Bullesque vortex generators at the middle part of the diffuser. http://img3.auto-motor-und-sport.de/McL ... 787988.jpg

I dunno if they had them mounted before
