Williams FW36 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The left sidepod of BOT had an issue today. What do you think may have caused it?

One of the Caterham's also had a hole in the sidepod/engine cover, but on the opposite side. I heard rumours it could be a turbo failure, causing it to explode, damaging the engine cover, but I thought teams had to run with a 'shield' around the turbo to protect against this type of thing?

Damage is too far forward to be a turbo, but could it be the mgu-h?

Williams damage was a problem with a bodywork fastener, Caterham the exhaust.

"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

That's Silverstone for you – the UK isn't a very hot place.

Scarbs has a large audience who don't have English as their first language. It would be a bit irresponsible of him to be sarcastic on twitter don't you think?

Let's wait and see his evidence (if he is not being sarcastic that is!).

Pat Symonds confimed it was air to air, plus the huge intercooler in the left sidepod

Thanks.. Even I was a bit unsure after many examinations of different photo's but I had a strong feeling based on past F1 and current Lemans cars.
