Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

interesting that this type of bulkhead is still legal with vanity panel...
( I mean that there is still the use of a vanity panel allowed to bend the rules, AFAIR the vanit panel was introduced to make the step noses of 2013 more eye-pleasing...)
Don't think it is a vanity panel.
IMO it is just an access panel, just so happens to be in the position of previously used vanity panels because of the bulkhead height and the slope of the nose.

English must seem Alien to Japanese speakers. Never seen a Japanese driver who was very fluent in English. It must be like trying to learn Martian for them.

The large nose panel could possibly be changed out for one of another shape to fine tune the aero? I'm not sure what the rule book allows for those kind of changes.

Two bits I found interesting regarding scarbs analysis was the nose and rear suspension.

IMO the desire to have quality airflow delivered to the rear diffuser by way of a very clean floor and bodywork moved up higher is what has driven most of the aero philosophy. Since the mushrooms create a nightmare around that area, they are history.

Thus I believe that components upstream, such as the nose, turning vanes, and such will be extensively tweaked to support delivering clean airflow to the top of the floor ahead of the diffuser. The floor area ahead of the rear tires displays attention to detail, but of course that too will be tweaked over the next few months.
Racing should be decided on the track, not the court room.

I agree if you look at the 360 model and the air exits even lower wishbone blockers would probably a massive hindrance. It looks like the exits are designed to work with the diffuser. They probably didn't think it was worth redesigning the crash structure, gearbox and suspension layout

I see this trend in the Mercedes too, where the first ten centimeters above the floor is very clean and clear, allowing efficient airflow to the top of the rear diffuser. It makes sense, the engineers are trying to claw back diffuser performance.

"This concept of driver friendly, it is maybe new - and part of this new philosophy," explained the Frenchman.

"We are trying to make sure we can give our drivers the ability to exploit the car to the limits, which means getting this performance package.

"If you have a performing car and a driver cannot drive it, then it is obviously a waste.

Eric Boullier, McLaren

"We want to make sure our drivers can drive the car to the limit, which means we will exploit to the limit. And this is where the new philosophy is turning to."
A cure for Lewis withdrawal is finally here. His name is Peter.

Would frontal impact on the nosecone not damage the vanity panel? A nosecone is replaceable, but what if the vanity panel gets damaged? Then it would be a DNF surely.

usually an impact big enough to get that far on the nosecone means the car would've been in a big crash. most likely the front suspension would be too damaged to drive the car.

if anything slides up to that high on the nosecone, it would hit the wheels too.

but if a miracle happens and only the nose needs to be replaced, but the panel is still damaged, i'm sure they've got more of them at ready. looks like it's only fastened with 7 screws.

I'm officially really pleased now I've seen that slow mo. I don't expect this car to ruin Merc but at least this looks to be a good, solid front runner. Thanks for the contrast pic with the 29. Leaps and bounds cleaner, more efficient design. Peter has brought the direction to use the front to feed that beautiful rear floor and make the diffuser really work.

If the Honda motor is anywhere near decent McLaren could really be back. And if McLaren are back, so will come the sponsors Ron needs.

Not just that, its no different to what the W05 had really.
