Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

14:26 We won't be seeing any more of the McLaren today due to problems with the Honda engine, but plenty of you have been asking about the design of the car. So here's CRAIG SCARBOROUGH on it:

"I have to say the McLaren in design terms looks as though it could be the best out there. Their packaging of the rear end is a step ahead of the other teams.

"Of course there’s more to making the package work than a tight rear end, but once sorted on the power unit McLaren could be threatening for podiums later in the year."

are you allowed to cover the drive shaft on its own? I thought not, which is why teams run them through the suspension arms

yes it does, they didnt give it a whole suspension part itself like others did, but they angled the drivetrain so much forward, that it meet the gearbox inside the hot air outlet, and hence cover the drivertrain from around the middle and to the center of the car, where im sure it matters the most. They choose to do so, because they obviously thought there would be more to gain by placing the lower suspension arms further back as flow conditioners there.

But that's not what a covered Driveshaft means. It would be like they had on the MP4/28 (?) where the whole Driveshaft is Integrated in a Suspension Arm to eliminate Turbulences from the spinning Driveshaft.

It is half blocked, but not covered.

Huge turbo-lag. Sounds like they are not using the MGUH to spin up the turbo here.

How do you when driver exactly did push the throttle? It might be that Alonso was just being cautious. I don't believe it is possible to deduce presence of turbo lag by sound alone especially when not in 100% performance lap.

from the point were the car starts to accelerate and revs start to increase, you can hear the turbo start to spool too, and its still spooling up at the end of the video, so thats about 3 seconds to not reach maximum boost/fueling. that sounds like turbo lag to me.
