Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

The heat exchanger will be mounted high above the compressor to keep it away from the turbine which brings about a significant saving in weight. Contrary to Mercedes they have not separated the compressor and the turbo which remains close to the exhaust.

Of course despite moving the weight to the top of the airbox and thus raising the centre of gravity of the car the aerodynamic advantage should outweigh this. Although this was also the reason behind many of the Ferrari teams problems last year. They would go to extremes in regards cooling which would hinder the power unit but be recovered with aero performance… supposedly.

With the radiators returning to a more traditional layout for the Woking squad, the airflow should be much improved from last year. Of course many publications will credit Peter Podromou as the architect behind this decision yet he arrived merely six months ago and is unlikely to have had much impact on whatwould have already been a heavily discussed concept between Mclaren and Honda.

Ultimately, as demonstrated in Jerez, this is without doubt a work in progress – one which Fernando Alonso needs to be delivering results as quickly as possible if he is not to regret leaving Ferrari last year.
Yet Scrabs posted a message on twitter with exact same picture stating that the turbo is split....

So if I understand it correctly, the gearbox is "floating" ?
Didn't know this was even possible, great spot!

Hi guys, I'm new here (been reading this forum for quite a while but that's not important right now).
There's an awesome link regarding honda ra109, it's gearbox and many other things. Although it's been 6 years and the technology may be much different there is a chance that they've put some more of it in mp4-30.

here you can read about it.

It's an isomorphic projection and they still haven't mated those gears (one's in front of the other) :P :D

Gearbox is fixed to rear crash structure, It's the rear end of the floor under that that is detached from it.

Smart solution, one inevitably has to ask himself if they can make it bend. 8)

From what I see the positioning of those oil coolers further up is for the aerodynamic concept that they are using.
We all know this is a redbull style car with all the cooling and mass closer to the driver, leaving the tail end open for air flow.
Now we may say that those oil coolers don't add much to the tail area if they were in the traditional area behind the engine. However keep in mind that when you move them from that area you are able to use the area for sidepod airflow to take a detour from flowing through the sides and instead over the top of the gearbox.
This concept is purely for allowing the path of cooling air to be shifted upward and towards the centre of the car, out of the way of the rear wheels and floor. This is one of the main reasons for the rear end looking so narrow.
In some ways its a compromise on COG.
The upper roll hope hole is for these oil coolers while the lower one is for the engine intake.
For Sure!!

I saw it in the first studio released pics and wondered if they can vent hot air down there...

Why is the contact patch not uniform. I thought that the entire tire surface would provide the best possible grip thereby the best traction.

It is unifrom when the car is moving through a corner at high speeds.

What is the camber limit Pirelli are making the teams run to for the 2014+ season? There was a -4.0°limit on the front with a -2.5° limit on the rears but during 2014 the rears looked flatter than before, possibly to deal with the increased torque on corner exit?

MCLAREN DESIGNER SAYS RACE FINISH IN MELBOURNE 'REALISTIC'
McLaren-Honda is confident it will see the chequered flag in Melbourne.

Together again after more than two decades, the famous British team and the returning Japanese manufacturer notably struggled at the opening winter test at Jerez.

"I thought they would be on the same level as Renault and Ferrari," said former McLaren driver David Coulthard.

"They (Honda) had an extra year to develop the package for racing, having announced two years ago that they are returning to formula one.

"I was really surprised to see their problems at the post-Abu Dhabi test, and they're still having problems now," the Scot told German-language Spox.

McLaren chassis designer Matt Morris admitted to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport that testing so far has obviously not been perfect.

"The number of laps and the performance was disappointing," he admitted, "but we were able to tick off some things on the programme that showed us that our new car is good."

Morris said the correlation between the wind tunnel and the track, as well as cooling, was spot-on, "which is good news, as problems in that area cannot be easily solved".

However, other areas of the development programme have been delayed, Morris admitted.

"We have slowed the aero programme," he said. "It makes no sense to bring upgrades when you have a lack of kilometres on the basic package.

"The plan was to start the season where we left off in 2014. However, this will require a testing programme without any major incidents."

That now seems unlikely, so when asked if McLaren-Honda is instead hoping simply to see the chequered flag in Melbourne, Morris admitted: "I think that's realistic."

Why slow the aero program? Surely they should want as much DF as possible to combat Merc? Weather the engine is there or not, you still need points of DF.
