14:06 McLaren has issued this statement regarding Alonso's accident and treatment:

"Today at 12:35 CET, while testing at the Circuit de Catalunya (Barcelona), during the fourth and final day of the current test, Fernando Alonso's McLaren-Honda car left the track at Turn Three, causing the right-hand side of his car to strike the wall.

"Fernando was driven to the circuit's medical centre where the circuit's doctors gave him first aid.

"He was conscious and spoke with the doctors.

"However, as per usual procedure in such circumstances, he was then airlifted to hospital where he is undergoing precautionary checks.

"We will issue a further update in due course."

We should stress, however, that this is just speculation at the moment and there's been no word from the team as to the cause of Fernando's crash.

I have never seen a F1 driver being airlifted to hospital in a single sided crash with a wall at 150km/h. Also he didn't hit the wall head on.
as per usual procedure in such circumstances
that line is not consistent with this situation.
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."

Any info about the McL damages? Will they manage to get back on the track?
they say the damage wasn't too big, so jb might get a few laps in before the chequered flag.

Right rear rim was ripped off against the wall, but hard to know how much for transmitted into suspension/g.box

COPE claim from speaking to the trackside photographer that Alonso was unconscious for several minutes.

From Ted Kravitz on Sky's live
“Let’s look at the possibilities,” says Ted. “Either something failed in the car – a component failure or, as has been wildly suggested online, there was an energy recovery failure which might have given Fernando an electrical shock. We can discount that; I’ve just spoken to Renault who say because that because the car was grounded it shouldn’t be possible for a driver to receive an electrical shock.

"McLaren are also planning to repair the car and send back out – and if it was, essentially, the car’s fault, then they wouldn’t be sending Jenson out.

"So if it’s not the car’s fault, did something happen to Fernando to make him lose consciousness? We just don’t know. But that is a line of suggestion coming from some quarters. But we must stress, we don’t know that and it’s just a speculative theory at this stage.”

McLaren say Alonso only went for precautionary checks, the car was only lightly damaged, yet over 2.5 hrs have passed without the Button being sent back out in it, which clearly raises questions.

That depends what damage there was, just because the car looks relatively intact doesn't mean the car is lightly damaged, shoving the driveshaft into the gearbox can cause enormous damage that isn't readily apparent until opened up. Given that there's been a few bugs/illnesses traveling around the paddock it could just be that he was unwell and the exertion of driving brought it on a lot worse.

Abad also said that is no time to speak about the causes, very shy of speaking, didn't like his way of speaking at all.
