Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

yeah, that pic from omnicourse shows it in the V between the Compressor and turbine..

The compressor should be at the front like the Mercedes. That's partially where Ferrari went wrong and got stuck with a smaller compressor.

Thanks

That´s pretty interesting, last laps are not that bad, if we suppose he was saving fuel for the whole race except those final laps once they can use full power they should be closer than you could expect after watching how they finished the race

Wich is consequent with his qualifying, he was not that far from the rest, less than a tenth with Ericson and less than 5 tenths with Perez

nonsense...the only reason ferrari had a smaller compressor was because they choose to use one ... where mercedes has their compressor has absolutely nothing to do with the size of their compressor

I used to think that but am now wondering whether the "physical" size (as opposed to flow capacity) of the volute may allow a slightly more efficient volute design. Typical automotive turbo compressors are very compact because the air leaving the wheel turns 90* to allow the volute (diffuser) to be a smaller diameter. Mercedes seem to have a large diameter volute, directly outside the compressor wheel.

If you want to compare Honda sound with other manufacturers!

The word is that Ferrari are now running a bigger compressor and turbine.

The arrangement last year was supposedly like that shown for Honda above, which limits compressor size.

Great - 0.1s off a poor driver in a broke team and 0.5s off a good driver in a broke team.

Sure much better than 1s and 1.5 second off a good driver in a broke team as we saw the whole race except last two laps

They definitely had their intercooler in the V I don't see how they could have that and fit a Compressor and MGU-H in there.

Couple of tweets indicate some improvements planned for Malaysia. Lets see if this is just a PR stunt

Re: Honda Power Unit

 @ pun, anyway, I've been thinking. Perhaps Honda intentionally designed the power unit in such a way that in order to do reliability updates, it requires an upgrade of critical components that normally would require tokens to update. Maybe there's more to the: "we must change such and such seal. Maybe a seal isn't just a seal but also is an assembly that does something important in the MGU-H or K that's critical to it's performance.

Brilliant! That would be a first - an engine designed so that performance upgrades look like reliability upgrades. No doubt they have programmed the comms interface to ensure the PU doesn't give the game away in one of its tweets.

Re: Honda Power Unit

On the positive side:

Honda stated that they plan to start with most powerful engine possible as changes can be made for reliability without using tokens, and they still have 9 tokens for the year.

I think the current "big" problems are a combination of integration and heat management and will take 3/4 races to correct and then a good development rate will start and the 2nd half of the season should be good :D [-o<

Look at Renault: They are worse off than where they started last year, and will also take a while to fix
