Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Could it be possible that the MGU-K rotor/armature on the MP4-30 is a integral part to the crank shaft, possibly housed in a portion of the cylinder block. It seems odd that they have to completely change engines when it fails (If MGU-K failure is the case). I believe that last year teams would just change the unit itself.
But they're allowed to have the MGU-K rotate at up to 50000 RPM. It would be a huge penalty to fix the rotor to the crankshaft and limit yourself to ~12000 RPM (needing higher torque for the same power). I guess it is theoretically possible to integrate some planetary gears into the block as well but all of this is just making life way too hard.

This isn't an argument against the merits of the chassis but wouldn't a lower approach speed mean less linear deceleration, allowing more of the grip to be applied to angular accel, hence higher apex speed? Wouldn't this be true even without exceptional aero?

Didn't think of that.

I'm quite following your line of thinking but the ultimate lateral g available in the turn not dependent on the corner entry speed. The actual speed in the corner and the radius of the turn define the g force.

But won't this ultimate lateral g available be what's left over after linear decel or accel?..assuming that for the ultimate lap, there's only the minutest part of a second spent under 0 accel which occurs at the apex

I'm not sure why Formula1.com just didn't pick a entry point to a corner (call it point A) and an exit point (call it point B). Take point A minus Point B. You could then display it by everytime a driver hit a specific corner , an average for a driver for a specific corner, the total corner time for a whole lap. There is so much you could do with the data, all very relevant data.

The correlation of Gs vs corner time would be interesting. You actually be able to tell if higher Gs meant he went through the corner quicker.

When i was reading the piece on the cornering speed, I thought about the race in Malaysia. I hope they have found something so they can put more stress on he engine, otherwise it will be an even greater difference between them and the Mercedes cars.
The 2 long straights are not good for a weak engine.
The plus side is: Mclaren have a car that they can develop alot, it's a good base.

lol is that a hammer the guy is holding in the last picture? Of all the tools men can use, I didn't expect a hammer is needed to work on a F1 car.

Looks like he's holding a punch in his left hand, I guess he's knocking a pin out of a suspension mount. Probably a temp fixing for transportation?
