Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's not. The gearbox assembly is not mounted to the motor. It's at an angle behind so just appears that way.

What strikes me is the compactness of everything. I know it's probably not fully dressed yet but even so, quite impressive.

Has there been any further confirmation on the Honda turbo layout? Scarbs said it's split, but am I wrong for seeing the compressor directly coupled to the turbo in this image?

Looks like he's holding a punch in his left hand, I guess he's knocking a pin out of a suspension mount. Probably a temp fixing for transportation?
Guys...guys that hammer is very precise tool and is been used to fine tune the sensor that is gven more troubles to the team.

Very compact. The air to air intercooler looks to be in the driver's right sidepod. That puts to rest anyone thinking the cooler above the ICE is the intercooler.

Does look like one doesn't it.

EDIT there should be another radiator next to it, wonder why they would place the intercooler further away from the ICE.

What is that pale blue pipe that looks like it's going to what you have labelled as the intercooler? Could it be liquid of some sort, so could that be a thick water radiator of some sort rather than an intercooler?

...and the other guys is cupping his hands to catch whatever it is that's coming out. I think you're right that it's a pin of some sort.

Coming from a big Ferrari fan?

Ferrari is notorious for using hammers. In fact they have sort of a tradition for using vintage tools. There was a time when you would see them use those old school hammers in the garage. Not sure if they still use them regularly these days.

That's just a throw away concept rendering. THere were images from the abu dhabi test last year when you see the intake pipe going down behind the gas tank hinting that the compressor is at the front of the engine.

Hi!

The mirrors are this high because Fernando Alonso requested it so he could see the rear tyres. That way he can see if they are degraded (worn out) or not.

Greetings! :)

By running things at lower levels the energy store isn't stressed so much so generates less heat.

:?: Do the technical regulations specify what the energy store must be made of? I know they have to be a certain weight but perhaps Honda or Mclaren have used a new substance that would give them an advantage if they can get the temperatures under control :?
I think they are using Panasonic ion-polymer Lithium batteries and unfortunately they haven't to much F1 experience with high energy density corroborate with high levels of guick charging and discharging ... hence their heating issues ...
IIRC Merc is working with A123 and Ferrari&Renault with SaftSaft ... and RB even having super capacitors until 2014 ...

Panasonic have plenty of experience with high charge/discharge rate batteries. Tesla use them in the model S, which can charge/discharge at over 500kW.

I want more pre-GP photos! [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o<

Maybe tomorrow we'll get more.

I saw a ferrari forum, they have a bunch of photos already, I'll be looking for their sources :P :P
