Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I'm reading the MGUK is integrated between the ICE and transmission, not off the side like the other PUs. This is similar to Honda's road going hybrids.

It was someone in here who speculated that. I simply dont believe the MGU-K would be a stressed member.

it wouldnt have to be a stressed member itself. thinking back to Scarbs description of the Mercedes gearbox, there is a fair bit of space between the gearbox and the flywheel on the engine, where the clutch sits. its described here at about 4 minutes in.:

if the McLaren layout is similar, but with the clutch at the gearbox end, theres should be plenty of scope for making an MGU-k fit in there. it would probably get pretty hot though, with the turbine sitting just above it, and the exhausts coming in from each side

And with that location for the MGU-K is the reason they have to replace the whole PU instead of the MGU-K only.

It is intergrated into the ICE block.(where you expect to see the clutch)

Button confirmed: “It’s probably wrong for me to say… it’s probably more like a Mercedes than it is the other two manufacturers.

GP-24/7:
And Michael Schmidt, the highly-respected correspondent for Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, claims: “Red Bull has ordered its own ‘VTT’ facility’.”

He said the only other companies with access to a ‘virtual test track’ – allowing full car testing under a roof – are Mercedes and Honda.

That means Honda does have the required resources to make it work :D

Next race: Button: "- Can you go faster?" "- I'm sorry Jenson, I'm afraid I can't do that". Now that does not sound so good marketing wise and puts Alonso's crash in a different perspective.

Looks like Cosworth Had an idea of MGU-K in the V of the engine

That's not really in the V, that's outside of the engine right above the crank. It's not like the MGUH placement.

I would say part or majority is within tHe V, Wat is outside are connectors and link to the Crank

On Ted's Notebook he mentioned that the word in the paddock is that Honda suffered a major MGU-H failure which requires a fundemental redesign and/or change in placement. I presume this was the cause of Magnussen's failure to start in Australia.

If there are critical components so close to the center of gravity of the engine, they would be more prone to hot spots as cooling shifts as the car is moving. For Honda to solve this, they'll have to find a way to pressurize the cooling system of these components so that it can overcome the centrepidal forces from the car while braking and cornering. This would never become apparent in an engine dyno, of course higher pressure means more material to withstand said pressure and also increases the possibility of failure. I have complete faith Honda can solve this, they have world class engineers around the world, I also think McLaren could help implement a solution.

To make this power unit competitive, McLaren and Honda have to have free transfer of information so that Honda can tailor components to McLaren's requirements. In my opinion, the fact that Honda can manufacture components from ground zero, and can customize any component for specific requirements can only be exploited if Honda knows the exact details of the chassis their power unit is integrated in. Likewise, McLaren needs to know the details of the power unit because the chassis itself has a profound effect on cooling, likewise McLaren's expertise and experience in components can help Honda in their designs. I think both teams stand to benefit in the larger scheme from this partnership.
