Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Unfortunately, McLaren were on a different strategy to all except Lotus. Surprising to see that the Lotus is not much faster in S1 where we have 2/3 of the pit straight. This could be because they were not running a lot of down force which would pay dividends on the straight (they were 10kph faster in qualifying) and 19kph faster on the straight after turn 3 so presumably losing out in the long turn 3. This may imply that the MP4-30 is a little better in the corners when we consider the MP4-30 is faster than the Lotus in S2 and by the speed trap speeds may have better traction as the MP4-30 is 2kph up on the Lotus at the sector end speed trap. The MP4-30 is also surprisingly quicker in S3 with the full length back straight. Despite a 10kph speed advantage on the back straight in qualifying, the MP4-30 must be overcoming that speed deficit in turns 11-14. This again points to better cornering ability.

IMO, with more power the MP4-30 should be able to overcome the Lotus.
Okay: let clear this up: JB=Jenson BUtton, FM= Fernando? Why not FA, RG=romain G, MV=Maldo?, DR=Daniel R?, SP=? Counfusing and i hate guessing.
Why not use simmpler innicials according key: "1stname"+2nd "name" for exapmle Romain Grojean is "RG" or use even more standard "FOM " 3 charachers abbvrevations, i mean those wich we see during TV stream like ALO, GRO, BUT etc.

My thoughts: FM=Felipe Massa, MV = Max Verstappen, SP = Sergio Perez, DR = Daniel Ricciardo

If you know all the Drivers Names it helps a ton.

btw: I have a feeling that whole discussion will be deleted sooner rather than later. :D

Or just wait some seconds and hit F5 and you'll see below on the topic review that your post is already there

Vortex Generators push the front wheel wake over the rear wing, as a ambulant air flow creates less down force at the rear.

...and i always thought the vg's on top of the sidepod help keeping the airflow attached to the bodywork.

Of course you want the tyre wake to be far away from RW and diffuser but i don't think that the vgs deflect the front wheel wake

It gets even worse, It looks like the connections from the front wing pylon supports to the front wing got the same treatment. :o Duct tape it is. Reminds me of the early Mercedes cars circa 2010 to 2012.......

You want the front wheel wake as far away from everything as possible. In fact you want to reduce the front wheel wake as much as possible. That is where the idea for having so much out wash on the front wings came from. The blown wheel nuts. And generating a vortex around the front wheel though the use of the out was front wing and the turning vanes under the nose push air into the low pressure, twisting mass of air. By reducing this twisting and tumbling of air you reduce the negative effect it has on aerodynamic parts further down the car. By reducing the size of the low pressure region and reducing the low pressure gradient behind the tyre you are reducing the drag created by that wheel. Therefore controlling flow around the front wheels is critical to both reducing drag and creating downforce at the back of the car.
