Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

That car won`t win this season because that car is to bad , best case scenario and target for Mclaren-Honda is to make into Q3.

Come on, this is just to sad. What progress?? Everyone excited about what?? P17-18 on the grid... MP4-30 is a joke!!![/quote]

I'm sorry your comment is neither technically interesting or useful to this thread. This is not a fanboy or trolling place. It is for technical discussion.

Back on topic. Very interested to see continued comparative steps in pace. Does anyone know if Honda allowed the engine to be turned up a bit more or is this mainly aero improvements?

Anyone have top speed charts available?

Do we even know, or have a guess, if they are running at full rpm yet? If they are, that a good improvement.

On the onboard video Mclaren/Button was reaching around 320 Km/h without Drs, sorry I don't have any proof as the video has been taking done.

the PU is down.. for sure the ERS.....they are loosing 0.5 sec on sectors 1 & 2 ...and 1+sec on sector 3 ...
very slower on acceleration on exit from slow corners....on fast curves its good ....
this car with ferrari or mercedes engine can fight for wins .....easy
(the onboards from button and hamilton show the big gap on power and how smoth and easy mercedes engine upshift)
i hope for big updates for spain GP ......

Keeping up with those improvements analysis - despite general miopia - McLaren was 2,7s off pace at AUS Q1 and 1,7s at China! It's obvious that there's some evolution.

If we use that 0,016s for each HP (some ppl said BBC used it), and if we keep in mind that Honda put 50 - 75 cv (AMuS report) since Melbourne:

50 - 75 HP => 0,8 to 1,2s of gain.

Now the numbers are: 2 tenths to fight Force India / 5 tenths to fight Toro Rosso, Sauber, Lotus / 7 tenths to fight Williams & Red Bull.

It's not easy, but it's happening.

I am happy with the improvements, and I expect Q2 at Bahrein, and Q1 for Barcelona (maybe) and I hope we'll see a fight for podium for the last 3 races.

So in terms of top raw Speed, from the previous tablet, Honda engine seems to express 1kmh inferior to Ferrari 2014 and only 4-5 kmh Behind 2015 Renault

Not so down on Top Speed.. Probably more is related to Ers working

According to Sky, Arai said that they were running their hybrid at full power: http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/12433 ... being-made

Relatively speaking, they were only 1.7 seconds behind Ferrari in Q1 who were also running softs so yeah I think they are making progress steadily. I reckon it will take them around half the season for them to be in the top 5 consistently. From the onboard video that was blocked due to copyright, the car didn't look too bad, it looked quite good especially through the high speed corners. Not Merc level but certainly Ferrari level.

Slow down. You are comparing it to the Marrussias/Manors. Aerodynamicly probably(pretty sure actually..) the worst car in the field. They will have a lot more drag to deal with. You can expect the 2014 Ferrari Enginge to top that by a significant margin in a decent car. Honda is getting closer, but not that close yet..

Re: Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

Post

I wanted to just give a slightly different take on the 'how far off is the MP4-30' game as the x seconds slower argument I disagree with due to varying lengths of the lap as for example a 3 second deficit around Nordschleife isn't that bad, but would be pretty shocking around the Top Gear test track :)

So the numbers taken from Wikipedia are as follows:
Australia
LH - 86.327
JB - 91.422 (105.90%)
KM - 92.037 (106.61%)

Malaysia
LH - 99.269
JB - 101.636 (102.38%)
FA - 101.746 (102.50%)

China
LH - 95.782
JB - 99.276 (103.65%)
FA - 99.280 (103.65%)
Sadly the Malaysia data was skewed by the rain in Qualifying, but this does show an improvement of approximately 3% overall since Australia, it also means they have already clawed back 50% of the original deficit to Mercedes.
