Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

“Reliability was a constant problem for us so today is a very good achievement and we know which steps we can still get out of this engine so already from Bahrain we can power up a little bit the power unit. In Barcelona then we have another spec coming, we keep going and improving every race.
More 25 HP? Great news, Q2 and points maybe...

Talking about Honda PU improvements, when we compare the numbers of speed trap from Quali to Race, one big questionmark rises. Why such a great difference between Macca's speed?

Speed Trap QUALI: P1 – Rosberg (334,6 Km/h), … P17 – Sainz (319,5 Km/h), P18 – Alonso (318,3 Km/h), P19 – Mehri (317,7 Km/h) e P20 – Button (316,7 Km/h)

Speed Trap RACE: P1 – Maldonado (340,3 Km/h), P02 – Grosjean (337,8 Km/h), P03 – Nasr (336,3 Km/h), … P06 – Button (332,4 Km/h)

To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone. ― Bruce McLaren

I have to wonder if this flap is adjustable and/or changeable with flaps of a different design. Maybe a longer one or one with a larger exit for the S-duct.

Thoughts? Or has anybody heard anything about this?

Haven't noticed that ...you point me to a pic ?

I dont know what the strategy is done by Honda between australia to bahrain. if I may guess the first 4 races they just fix the first spec PU . after the new European race they use second spec that has been in the correct position of MGU-k. So what they did in the first 4 races only an obligation to present F1 team in the race, there is no benefit for research and development for new spec engine. This probably is ron dennis as cultural differences between Japan and the british. If that true Honda wasting a lot of resources to create a new engine spec PU and fix PU first.

'2nd spec'? The quote said 'another spec'. McHonda has said all along that they've been building on what they're learning from race to race (that includes what's going on in Free practice and Quali) and making incremental improvements. this includes Making reliability changes to the engine with FIA's approval.

Not sure how you can start out with a positive statement, throw out everything that they're saying and come up with your own version of it. Then turn it into a divisive argument. I think that says more about you that it does anything else.

I don't think they're allowed to make any changes to PU parts that have already started a race weekend apart from in a very few select and specific areas laid out in the sporting regs. It's not the engine freeze rules that govern this but the rule about engine usage. i.e. you're only allowed 4 power units for the season, you can't start bringing new parts to that power unit once it's started to race.

It was already noted by Honda that they cant "open" the engines up, so they run a race sim in Japan using the engine mapping from the last race to replicate the race/s they just did.

They can change certain bits but that's the whole point of the token system row at the start of the season. Limited development

THe engine is designed on the limit. So the good thing is that it's maximumb power is inherent in the design... It is just not uncorked yet because of reliability issues. The other good thing is that you can make changes on the grounds of reliability.. So things are not so bad for Honda.

I just know that the rules as such, but to be honest it would be difficult, because of some forums I read error on a fundamental machine (error laying MGU)

Tech Bite: McLaren debut new diffuser on Button's car

Image

McLaren may still be struggling with a power deficit from the Honda power unit but the aero team are pushing on with their development path.

A new diffuser design was scheduled to appear in Bahrain next week, but the team managed to bring forward the development, with one of the new floors arriving in China.

Jenson Button was given the honour of running the new diffuser and floor on his MP4-30, though both drivers are likely to run the new configuration in Bahrain.

The new diffuser (above) features a change to the outer strakes, which have been elongated and now terminate on the diffusers edge. The strakes are used to minimise flow separation as the airflow changes at differing speeds. By changing the strakes the team are clearly looking to change the way in which the diffuser operates and interacts with the airflow.

If they can develop the car at this rate, i think hongary will be a nice track for the MP4-30. This weekend will be hard due to the long straights, but with a little luck a podium can be done this year!
