Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Excuse me, but am I alone thinking this token-business is pure nonsense, which only serves to preserve status quo?

No

No, it seems that suppliers can change virtually everything under the excuse of reliability.

That isn't true, I know of 1 Honda "Reliability" upgrade that was blocked (3ird or 4th race) cause it was "presumed" to improve performance. Arai had mentioned they had brought 2 versions of the new PU to that race and 1 was blocked (which they were kind of expecting).

I think the Token system isn't the problem. The problem is when you can't deploy them during the year. Especially for new manufactures like Honda that are so far behind it isn't funny. Honda should have "Carte blanche" to develop non stop.

I think it was Malaysia where a Honda Update was rejected.

It's not only that, the FIA introduces a very radical new engine-formula, with the engines homologated before the first race.

How intelligent is that on a scale?

Rule similar to MotoGP would be nice. Would allow teams to catch up.

It seems to me hat they can't even get the revs up, while the 25 km/h top speed deficit from above was accurate?
I quite agree in the video it looks like there is a rev limiter fitted or they are in a de-rated engine mode, maybe bedding the power unit in for more competitive circuits, dont even know if f1 units need to this but by the sound alone if it was revving to the same amount as mercedes it would be pretty good?

Could the low revs be a function of the energy harvesting and deployment being down, I always thought Honda liked high revving engines!?

As max fuel-flow is from 10500 to 14000 Rpm, it seems logical to keep the gear-shift window in the lower part of that range.

From what I can read from the video, this is exactly what Rosberg does, while Alonso's doesn't even pass 10500?

I'm afraid that the humiliation might get even worse at Monza.

So surely this shows untapped potential in the ICE if the revs are so low and all is not lost (at least for the future)?

To me that´s ERS deficit, before Blanchimont Alonso is over 11k rpm (310-311), but in Blanchimont the revs go down due to drag, and never recover. Likely he´s using last watts from ers for the straight before Blanchimont, but after the corner there´s no more electrical power so the revs can´t go up again because there´s not enough power to overcome the drag at that speed

That seems like a most logical conclusion Andres, no help from the MGU-H?

So how many tokens did Honda use?

3 on the engine, and they'll use the last 4 on other components. Probably a new MGU-H, different ERS, maybe new controls.
