Anyway, I got Fluent 6.0 and Gambit 2.0 and I can run Fluent, but not Gambit. Anybody has ideas for troubleshooting, even though my description is completely vague.

I'll start from the beginning. I got Fluent 6.0 and Gambit 2.0 and then ran their individual setups. I put in the license (crack) for Fluent and Fluent runs fine. The RAR file told me to put the license for Gambit in c:\flexlm and that was it. When I ran Gambit it wouldn't start, so I installed Exceed and after the graphics checks and everything, I got a 3D modeler working, which I assume is Gambit. Then I restarted my computer and everytime I run gambit it just starts exceed w/o the 3D modeler popping up. Airpak works fine but this doesn't. I hope this makes sense.
I can access the Exceed toolbar, so I'm wondering if I need a connection to some server to get access to Gambit.

i got the same exact file from eMule and couldn't get it to work. Possibly the reason is a corrupt sile. It happens sometimes. People don't know what they are doing and miss some files when they are making the rar achive. But if you do manage to make it work, let me know?

You're probably right. But I got Gambit to work once and afterwards it just ran exceed.

I just looked from eMule, under the searchword "gambit" and came up with an .ISO version of gambit, and as you probably know, ISO format is an exact copy of the original cd, so it works for certain, all you have to do is burn it and you have the authentic cd. Though you can use Daemon Tools to run it straight from computer if you don't have a burning cd-drive.
Ok, the gambit version i started downloading yesterday just finished. No luck there. Damn amateurs. To begin with all the dll files were in the wrong folder, so the program refused to start, and after i moved them, found some other difficulties, and i gave up..
But i was thinking, west... do you have to use Gambit? I found this on the Fluent website:
"Fluent's software can import mesh files in the following formats:
ANSYS
MSC NASTRAN
MSC PATRAN
SDRC I-DEAS Master Series
Altair Hypermesh
CGNS
PLOT3D
STL
Most CAD/CAE software can export mesh files in one or more of the above formats."
So you could make the meshes in a cad program of your choice(which obviously supports one of the formats mentioned above) and then import the meshes onto fluent. You don't actually need to use Gambit for it.
Pretty sweet stuff. I’m running Fluent/Gambit (Windows) under a license, so if there’s any ‘technical’ things I might be able to re-phrase and get support from them. Can’t really help with your unix install, but I know in the XP environment that Fluent does not need the Exceed emulator while Gambit should want to kick that on first before running. Don’t know why it’s dropping there, but usually that’s a license acquisition issue.
Fluent may or may not do a good job with imported meshes. The nice thing about TGRID is that it makes a better volume tet-mesh than Gambit (you still need Gambit to clean the geometry and to make the face meshes).
My work email is Paul.Casalmir@sdms.usa.xerox.com I don’t have access to a ‘real’ CAD program, but if you need some help I’d be happy to at least try
I know you don't need Gambit, but it seems to me that it has better integration w/ Fluent than any other CAD program, since it is from the same company.
As for the license thing... there is a program called flexlm license manager that supposedly uses the license for Gambit. I used that program to run the "crack" Gambit license. If this helps at all.
Finally, there was another Gambit.exe file I think, and it asks that a Home environment must be set in console, then the console disappears.

Yeah, flexlm is the license manager (I heard in the 'old' days there used to be a 'key' that plugged into your serial port). Anyway, one box can basically serve out the licenses so that Fluent can keep a tighter reign (apparently not).
If you are running under XP I believe there might be a environmental variable that has to be set if you have a license on one box and fluent on another. I also had a problem running certain older Fluent products on a Dell Optiplex related to the cortex version.
TGrid is a Fluent program that is very popular for tet-gridding (almost required for multiple complex 3D shapes). Good Luck,

To use TGrid you still need to import the geometry with the faces meshed. I do this in Gambit as well as any CAD cleanup that might be needed (holes and very small faces sometimes happen on export).
I would think that some other packages can lay on a good face mesh, I don't have good CAD access myself. Also, TGrid is a little steep on the learning curve side although the tutorials help and if you have access to their online support they are good too.
I hear some other CFD packages may be better in regards to meshing (CFX, Star-CD, CFDesign) and the 'big' guys like AdvantageCFD use mesh specific packages (Gridgen). To late for me, but it's worth a second opinion.

CFD is based around assumptions; the accuracy of the solution depends not only on the knowledge of the mathematics behind the software but the assumptions the user makes!!!
