Montoya on how he feels sorry for Alonso:
Then he went to McLaren, and when (wife) Connie and I heard that Lewis was going to be his teammate, we said 'Oh my God.
We immediately felt sorry for Fernando because Lewis is Ron's baby. Ron paid his whole career, so Ron wants him to win and not Fernando. He would rather see Lewis win, who is like his own child to Ron. Fernando is nothing to him.
They try to make them be equal, but Lewis is genuinely a really fast driver. And apart from being really fast, he's Ron's favourite. It's just the truth, and it makes it bad for Fernando."

It's true though, AFAIC. It seems that having latin blood in that team tends to shake things up too much.

In part, that's why I would prefer driving for Ferrari, I would fit in better 8).

I don't like Ron and his holier than thou attitude, however I respect him more with the way he has handled this situation. Alonso is gone. He is like a cancer on the team and has to be removed. I think he has no class.

One of our more level headed members commented at the time:
checkered wrote:... I wouldn't characterise making ambiguous threats to one's team boss about giving damaging material (that the team boss quite likely wasn't aware even existed) to the series authorities in order to get preferential treatment within the team as an exercise in saving one's team. Not by a long shot. Especially as one's actions have kept the team in comparable jeopardy for six months, all the time risking the very same punishment, namely exclusion from the series.

To me it seems likely that there was a lot of damage control behind the scenes after the situation reached meltdown within McLaren and there was a scramble to explain it away. Basically the only thing that kept the WMSC from acting in a consistent fashion was the threat of a "mutually assured destruction". Too much damage to the series. The drivers were the only straw all the parties could hang on to, because trying to prove who didn't know anything became impossible. The immunity was a trojan horse in many a sense, but it certainly wasn't the intent or innovation of Alonso. Ron recognised the parameters of the situation, went to Max and "took one for the team"...
And this is how it is sold today to the public:
Ferdinand Alonso wrote:2007 was very difficult but I learnt a lot personally," he told the British newspaper Guardian. "It was good for my career to take that step of joining McLaren and growing up. I learned how to work with a team and also to withstand the media pressure. The difficulties I had were coming from the team and the media. Now I am much more prepared for everything in Formula One – and in life as well."
Dear Fred.

I cannot believe what I read. Did the team and the media screw up at Hungary black mailing Ron Dennis? Did the media freak out because the British rookie was faster? Did the team have cosy Monday lunches with the pals at the Spanish motor sport press dropping tons of critical internal details of the team to make you look good?

I must have lost big parts of my memory if I want to believe in those fairy tales. "I learnt a lot personally" seems to be the only honest bit from the above. Good to know that at least that bit was achieved.

 Jon, i love it! I gotta keep that one for later!

That was as much a non-newsworthy story as Flavio resigning from the board of QPR..

Well, the story at least reminded us that our beloved top drivers have selected awareness, selected memory and selected consciousness. It probably goes with the job. Ferdinand is no different to other greats in the sport.

I hope at least the bit about learning to work with the team was true. It will be usefull when the --- will hit the fan this season. At one stage or the other that will usually happen and then we will learn who the team players are. Some switch off the fan and some step up the rpm.

"Some step up the rpm"... yeah, sure. Meanwhile, allow me to switch off this fan. ;)

Please, try to understand: last week I logged 185 moderating actions. We're like 18 days away from racing, respectfully I think it's not the moment to start a thread bashing drivers, no matter who: I fear I'll still have 18 days of moderating hell to go through.

Besides, it's the second thread you try to hijack: for the nails of Christ, if any of you have to become grumpy about Alonso's comments, use a new thread (or better yet, another forum devoted to this kind of talk ;)).
