Manor MRT05 Mercedes

Post

This the official car topic about the 2016 Manor contender, the MRT05-Mercedes. This thread will handle more stringent rules:

-Absolutely no livery talk in the car topic. Liveries are by nature topics assigned to the team thread, and should be discussed there. Posts about liveries in the car thread will be removed.

-Discussion about the car's hardware only. No discussion about the laptimes (should be discussed in the testing or race threads; test thread is here: http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... =1&t=23795). No speculation or rumors towards future features of the car; no speculation about the competitive performance (car beats car B but car C, etc.). Such discussions will be removed as well.

-Discussion about the Power Unit should belong in its respective PU topic. How the car's chassis and bodywork is adapted to it remains in the car thread, but pure features of the PU don't go there. Since this is quite a grey area, we will not remove transgressions on that front, but will move them when appropiate.

That might sound strict and is infact so, but this is done to safeguard the topic quality. We will be very thorough about that this year! If you don't find anything worthwhile to post, please resist the urge and do not post. There is nothing wrong with that and is infact the better option when there's nothing new.

There was a fair bit of publicity in the run up to this season about Manor having a Williams Gearbox, but that rear end looks quite large still. Would the Williams gearbox be just the gearbox, or would it be the gearbox and gearbox casing?

This car... it is not as developed as the Haas just look at the front suspension alone.. In these regs no one does the suspension like this anymore . Everyone else has moved on. This actually looks like they just regurgitated the suspension Still born MR-04 from the parts heap. Can anyone see what I am talking about?

https://twitter.com/suttonimages/status ... 4524490752 I don't know how quick she is but I love the clarity of the design. It's a very classic, unfussy shape.

This is a really nice view of the Manor MRT05, some nice detail in front of the side pods, split turning vanes and side pod undercut.

Regarding the suspension, aren't manor buying both front and rear from williams? The layout and details look extremely similar, as do the brake ducts.

No, only rear suspension is from Williams

Suspension Front - Manor Racing full composite. Pushrod to rockers with
torsion springs and inboard damping
Suspension Rear - Williams Advanced Engineering
Dampers Front - Penske
Dampers Rear - Williams Advanced Engineering

Complete rear end from Williams for the gearbox internals and case with the suspension as well. They are paying Williams £4m a year for this with £1m in trackside and embedded support, that gives them 7 Williams mechanics in the garage and 3 engineers looking at the data with another 5 back at Banbury for Factory Support on the data side and another 3 factory based support mechanics as well.

This is a great deal for Williams as it means they can get the traces for the manor guys and double their data gathering every year. Its also a great deal for Manor as Caterham in 2011-2014 were paying Red Bull Technology £8m for the same level of support. Williams have always been a good price as that's the same price that they had for HRT in 11 and 12 for season long support.

The front end is a Manor Racing Technology design, this years design is probably a bit of a MR04/MNR04B design with the MNR01 in there, its probably the nest they could do in the 8 months they have spent designing again. However this is still a good quality F1 spec design. It will give them loads of setup architecture options as from what I am led to believe they managed to make lots of suspension inroads in 2014 before they ceased to trade and came out of administration with their CVA. Max Chilton reported in every test they attended in 2014 they made massive inroads unlocking their potential. I think they managed to do so last year as well, but they didn't test as they knew it was only going to yield a 1% increase in lap time, and what's 0.04 of a second when the next car is almost a second ahead of you in lap time.

I think there is lots to be unlocked mechanically in this car and lots to be developed in a aero sense as I think there will be a thumb nose and new front wing at some point. I think this car has more potential than the Haas at the moment, its just an incredibly immature set up until they manage to get the Manor/Williams/Mercedes relationship integrated properly.

And here's the part where ted talks about the fins near the driver's head of the car.

Somehow there's a bug and it didn't link to the correct timestamp. 14:30s

Wouldn't 1% be around 1 second?
