Mercedes AMG F1 W07

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Damn that looks like they're on another level versus everyone else w/r/t the level of aero detail

Looks like they've taped off 80% of the rad. A slim slot for electronic cooling along the bottom rim. And some vortex generators.

80% is right! Holy crap, that's crazy...seems excessive, even for testing...that has to hurt aero, too. Anyone else confused?

If they are testing with over half of the radiator section off, then I wonder if we will see much smaller side pod openings at some stage.

It would sort of fall in line with the huge air intake fitted. I mean, it was strange to see that so big, but normal side pod openings.

Looks like a small piece of the floor has either fell/snapped off or it`s modular and can be removed easily (not sure why they`d remove it though). Back left just in front of the rear wheel. It`s not on in the shot when Rosberg is in the car either (left to right, top picture above)!

"Sort of" indeed. If we can agree that over 50% of the radiator is closed for business, it would have to follow that the balance of the lost cooling is being handled by that relatively small intake. I can't imagine this being likely.

I also can't see them releasing a smaller sidepod. All that new intense aero development ahead of the sidepods would be for naught.

This is vexing...

Maybe they are testing reliability for hot weather or running behind other cars.

I had considered that. But the amount of taping seemed excessive. That much covered would really slow the car....and with just that little patch in the upper corner available for cooling? Looks like something you'd do if you were trying to overheat the engine and kill it.
