Scuderia Ferrari SF16-H

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's probably only the camera angle, but from this pic it looks like different break ducts for left and right side.

This may have been present since the launch of the car but I haven't been able to find a good photo to compare with. Is this large 'channel' in the center rear of the floor where the reference plank is new?

It's been the same for some time now. With risen gearbox it's just more pronounced.

I think some amount of cooling can be sent back through those floor channels. There may be a cooling outlet under the engine cover.

The idea is to minimize air flow over the sidepod, where it would generate lift, and instead direct it around the sidepod, which is a route to the back of the car that doesn't generate lift.
...even so much as hints that air flow over the sidepod is, or can/should be, stopped?

Does this look right?

All that stuff about the airflow conditioners being there to clean airflow / energize airflow to keep the sidepods from stalling / redirecting airflow for downforce related purposes is probably right. It's not that your explanation didn't make sense, but to me there doesn't seem to be an efficient way to prevent airflow over the sidepods from generating lift, due to their shapes.

But I can never say anything for sure, my work as an aerodynamicist is limited to studying the effects of airflow over my hand outside the car window.
imo it's the same as with the fenders on a LMP(or any other car) they generate lift by default, so he aim is to reduce the lift.

Thats interesting POV, but Ferrari was a team that historically brought most updates in last few years. Trouble is, very little of them worked  Allison already said last year that they are shooting for strong base, and then updates that won't be introduced every few races like they used to be. Their aero dept work seemed to be scattered on all fronts with no clear vision, so IMO seeing Ferrari is not rushing with updates and seems upbeat with car would point to that actually being a good thing.

"Untapped potential" "Few new updates so we will see how it goes then.." are well known things TPs say when car is not as good as they were hoping for.

Like the folks who repeatedly tout Ferrari's new chassis?

In all seriousness, and with regard to the general (off) topic under discussion, how a car looks can be very deceiving, which is why it can only prompt questions, not answers.

For instance, despite the presence of components that appear to have been developed significantly during the offseason...
grandprix.com wrote:"We have improved but it was not enough," Button said in Melbourne ahead of the 2016 season opener.

"Reliability is much better but there is still work needed with outright power and overall downforce."

The 'downforce' comment is an obvious reference to McLaren's chassis, and teammate Alonso agrees: "Reliability has been very strong, which is good because now we can work on the overall power between races."

But he added: "We are still far away aerodynamically in order to fight competitively."
Let us return now to the underdeveloped SF16-H.
