they direct more airflow towards the rear wing thus creating more downforce

Here is a link where it is claimed that the removal of the Viking Horns during 2007 and the Ferrari style rear wings is a clear evidence of copying Ferrari technology by Mc Laren

Here is the story
A person who owns a PC store near Coughlan's house accepted a book of
780's pages from Coughlan's wife to scan it and turn it into a CD-ROM . That man , who knew Coughlan working status in Mc Laren ,discovered what it was written in the book and decided to send a CD copy to Ferrari and then the stories follows as everybody Knows ....(believe me it is true and it is written in F1 Bussiness magazine Sept 2007 issue)

Stepney gave this book to Coughlan in Spanish GP
