Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

If they are using pre-chamber, should that be considered as direct injection?

AMUS is talking about a special spark plug that features a perforated thimble. This spark creates some sort of "fat-cloud" in the combustion chamber. It's exposion has enough energy to completely ignite the rest of the mixture. I think this fat-cloud is what they mean when they talk about the pre-chamber-ignition.

Vorkammer = Pre chamber
entzundung = inflamation

so translated = pre chamber ignition.

Mercedes has a patent on this kind of ignition.
I have not managed to find a English version yet

A pre chamber, is a completely different chamber. Google "pre chamber ignition" and you will see a lot of images like this one.

I am absolutely aware of this, but the AMUS description does not point into that direction. According to that AMUS article there seems to be no additional physical chamber. They describe it more like a 2-step ignition process to increase efficiency.

This sounds more like it to me. There is ignition in that little pocket initially.
For Sure!!

aye :) spark onto the pilot injection, then progressively inject the rest of the fuel into that little fireball in the chamber ?
keeps the heat away from the cylinder walls (thermal efficiency)

Sounds similar to how a flameholder in an afterburning turbojet/turbofan engine works.
