As was Grosjeans last lap when he ran out of time. Truly impressive =D>
Sadly Sauber seems to go backwards, they used to be a strong midfield team but now they are heading towards the back of the grid, in a hurry...

I think Ferrari is closer than last year.

Of course they are closer. Last year in Melbourne Ferrari was 1.5s adrift. Maybe if Vettel ran 2nd time gap would probably be smaller, but it is still too large.

No two ways about it, Merc is spaceship and regular wont do. They need to innovate and bring on updates.

My question is, how the hell is RBR so far away? 1.7 seconds, no way that is all engine right. At least half a second is aero/chassis.

Just watched Qualifying (overslept this morning) #-o

- Mercedes still out of reach
- Ferrari a disappointment
- Toro Rosso very impressive! Especially considering their 2015 PU, and time constraints which they had to deal with.
- Underwhelmed by Williams, their car looks a mess on track.
- Mclaren quicker than expected! They could well surpass Williams and Force India this season.
- Great job by Jolyon Palmer and Verstappen.
- Raikkonen nowhere close as usual.
- Q1 pretty interesting. Q2 and 3 a total mess and let-down.

Why this? The race is not over yet. However here are last three Australina Q3 results for Ferrari. And they don't go for one more lap today.

2014 ALO 5th -1.588s
2015 VET 4th - 1.430s
2016 VET 3rd - 0.838s

I like to see Ted and sky not seeing the progress of Mclaren, they are quickest than expected but looking for anything that fullfill their theory Alo is gonna leave.

If you want to do a qualy based on who is the fastest and everyone is running at all time. Why not to do a 5 slots of 5 min where you have 2 laps for the drivers to do their best on each. After 1st slot eliminate 5 drivers, second another 5, third another 4, fourth slot another 4 and final or fifth slot leave it for best 4 drivers left. IMO what doesn't work on both qualy systems, last years and this years is the time we have to wait to end sesion or drivers to be eliminated.

Yea, Ferrari time on itself is impressive, but no body expected Merc to improve so much :wtf:

Vettel also didn't go for second run, and he could certainly go faster as he said but not fast enough.

In any case, this is closest Ferrari has been to pole at Melbourne since 2010.

2011 ALO 5th - 1.5s
2012 ALO 12th 1.5s
2013 Massa 4th - 1.1s
2014 ALO 5th -1.588s
2015 VET 4th - 1.430s
2016 VET 3rd - 0.838s

Not that bad when looked in context.

Sebastian Vettel: “In comparison to the Mercedes drivers we are a bit further behind than we expected, but we are happy with 3rd and 4th, especially for me as it was a bit difficult to find the rhythm in Qualifying. I felt quite good with the car in P3, but then it took some time to get back, and only in Q3 it really started to happen. I had a very good lap, and in the end, because the gap was quite big, I felt that my first lap had been good enough. There really wasn’t another half a second in there, so we called it off, and saved a set of tires, although surely we would have loved to be closer"

Can someone tell me why they didn't upload Hamilton's pole lap on the F1 website as they usually do.

Well obviously , but for Rosberg even 2-3 tenths is too much since he will be the one in the sight not Lewis.
