McLaren MP4-31 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I didn't expect there to be only clear water in radiators but it's an interesting colour.

Here is a good sequence of pictures showing the stuff...

Maybe they're using that waterless coolant?

Never heard of it.
Has a higher boiling point so doesnt need to be pressurised. Non corrosive too

This is the best photo of the seperation that they now get between the floor and the rear crash structure, very impressive

You'd think they would have used a countersunk screw for the upper screw of the rain light.

What would Ron think?

I wonder if it has something to do with the jack system.

Does the jack make contact with the bottom of the crash structure?

No, the jack doesn't reach that far:

I wonder why the middle section of the diffuser stays that low that far, is that mandated by the rules? For the sidechannels the floor goes up much quicker.

Yeah, the plank is required to go that far back.

I am of the opinion that the crash would have been less serious, at least the car would not have been airborne, should there have been tarmac in the runoff area.

From my perspective, there has not been enough thought from the FIA about the interaction of the side impact bars with gravel traps. The focus has been hard perpendicular surfaces.
Actually the FIA does focus on side impacts with gravel traps, which is exactly why they're trying to eliminate all gravel traps in favour of paved run-off areas.

Yeah, the plank is required to go that far back.
The end of the plank is at the vortex generators, I would expect something more linear up. Like this:
