would have been good for them in terms of momentum to get into Q3 - but for the race they are probably better off where they are

Hope you're right.
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.

Extremely frustrating Quali. Q3 was well within reach i think. Hopefully the Race will get better, but McLaren doesn't seem to get any Luck this Year. :-(

Edit: So Fernando and Jenson are starting from P11 and P12 respectively. https://twitter.com/andrewbensonf1/stat ... 7848387585

Very frustrating red flag, but could be a bit of luck. Now they're starting 11th and 12th, they're the first cars on fresh tyres. Could do something decent from there!

Hamilton will finish around P5-P6 at least, so that's 2 places to gain the race, let's see what happens.

I think is still early on the season to give a final verdict but my initial impression up to this qualy is that obviously Honda turn the corner with their PU, still lacking reliability (well all the manufactures are having early reliability issues) and peak power, but the "shield" of Honda crappy PU used by Boulier, Dennis and his team to cover all McLaren weakness is fading pretty fast, because is clear that McLaren, even if his chassis is good is still trailing several chassis of the field (looks RB with a customer Renault PU) and race / qualy strategy is clearly not very good, blame bad luck for their clear lack of cleaver ways of handle a clear shoot to Q3, is poor and lame.

Lets hope they can get a good and clear race to see how good their car really is, chassis wise, how they can handle tyre degradation, top speed and fuel consumption.

Fernandos Accicent, Jensons failed Engine and ruined Quali in Bahrain (thanks to that awesome Quali Format :? )and now the Red Flag at the worst possible Moment isn't really something a better Chassis could cover up.
So i don't think poor and lame is the way to describe my Post. But of course you are free to have your own Opinion.

But as i said a few Times here already i won't draw anithing close to a verdict about McLaren and Honda until after the Barcelona GP.

@maguetox

Don't forget that one of the "crutches" that McLaren used last year was that they couldn't develop the chassis cause they had so little track time.

Nobody said they had a really good chassis, They basically had the 2014 chassis. Not only did the PU not deliver on power but it prevented advancement on the chassis.

They knew they needed chassis work. I think everyone still agrees they're STILL not where they want to be. CHASSIS or PU wise.

I don't agree that McLaren are hiding behind the PU weakness this year. They've clearly stated that their goal is to get there during the year.

Yes, with a good & clean start and with some good tyre strategy for both cars, I believe we can be in the points tomorrow [-o<

I very much doubt he has!

But on that subject sector times would help, especially with the nature of the sectors in China. However with a drying track in q1 & McLaren only running on used tyres in q2 i guess they would be very misleading anyway

I don't think people are giving Honda enough credit, lots of finger pointing going on recently saying how Mclaren having to run low DF to make up for the crappy PU, Honda has poor drivability which is hampering the chassis etc.
Ferrari in their second year made improvements similar to Honda's 2nd year and they got a lot of praise and Honda deserves similar praise in my opinion.
PU is still not where it should be but the Chassis is not where it should be either. Still it's early days and the package is work in progress and as Thunders said let's wait till Barcelona.

How bout something from today!

"I have not seen anyone as motivated as Fernando. He is one of the main pillars of this team."

And Boullier said Alonso will have noticed the progress McLaren-Honda has made so far in 2016, revealing: "We are seeing light at the end of the tunnel now.

"By Monaco we will have one of the best chassis and we could reach the podium, why not?" he added.
