I've got a poorly! :-(

Post

Or rather my laptop has. Further to my post in this thread viewtopic.php?t=4847 I downloaded Avira AntiVir Persoanl Edition Classic (Sorry Carlos, after I had downloaded it you then made the great sales pitch for the Avast anti virus software otherwise I would have used that one. Anyway. Whilst being a naughty boy and attemping to download a copy of Microsoft Excel from Limewire, my laptop immediately started going nuts and a warning popped up saying that a virus or unwanted programme was found in C:\WINDOWS\Temp\tmp4.tmp (contains detection pattern of the worm WORM\Rbot.174080) ... whatever that means. I'm then given the usual options. -Move to quarantine, -Delete, -Rename, -Access deny or -Ignore. Well now I've tried all of them and this thing keeps popping up over and over again.
I still have the expired Norton on my laptop. Would I be best to remove this programme from my laptop? Could this be stopping the AntiVir from working properly? What will happen if I remove both programmes then try to download the virus software Carlos pointed out?

Any help and advice greatly recieved!!

Bugger!

Further to the above, I'm occasionally getting a Norton Virus warning too which claims to have detected and removed the virus. I'm very tempted to remove both anti virus programmes and download afresh with another programme. I don't know what I'm doing. Why am I such an I.T. halfwit?

EDIT: Because I'm so inpatient I have deleted Norton and it has took some quarantined files with it. So far so good!!

try using this tool -> Malicious Software Removal Tool

it might be better to try it in safe mode. after it finishes, delete all the temp files just to be safe. This worm you have probably loads it self through the registry.

What to Do?

Post

Scuderia_Russ Try Peterh's solution first as it is very straight forward. Then look at mine.

You have detected WORM\Rbot.174080 in your C drive temp files while using Avira AntiVir Personal Edition You are not the only one to encounter this heartrendering problem, much less threatning than say, being subjected to brain surgery by a barber. I found your exact problem, with the same anti- virus program and the same WORM, on a favoured computer Forum, that suggests a fix on the Avira Personal Edition Forum

http://forum.avira.com/thread.php?posti ... d82c1e66a6

SR... Read the last post from Barrie at the bottom of the page, this will reassure you the thread is about your exact problem...which will be very reasurring...then go to the top of the page, read the posts, and apply the solution...when you run into something you don't know about...lets say something like 'safe mode or restore'...just go to your Help section on your computer, maybe use your desktop, for instructions on how to do these very scary things. Actually it may seem like a trial as difficult, as say interviewing for a job that you have absolutely no qualifications for ... or remember the old days?...chatting up a girl way out of your league, I mean model beautiful, buying a single round, then scoring big and taking her back home for a glorious once off s :D :D g? This is the same thing.

It should work...but if the s :D :D g is not up to standards, a disappointment...uninstall the pirate Windows Excel and Avira ..and try another antivirus program... read through the original thread...one of our members commented on how to go throgh a program to search out hidden Trogans, similar to a Worm...but not as active...I don't advise trying the 'chatting up' experiment as I understand you have married in the last few years...but do go and see all 3 Pirates of The Carribean Movies

Good thing I got up for a second round of milk and cookies at 4AM, I prefer Warmed Milk and Chocolate Covered Digestives ...

If it works, send me a few boxes. If you have doubts...recruit a few more opinions. You might want to go to the Avira Forum.

I would like those cookies or perhaps your better half might introduce me to someone from her office that is attractive and in her 40's...that would be much nicer than Milk and Cookies

There's three of these short 15s films, but I've linked to only one of them.

I use Avast anti-virus. I also have windows defender, a-squared from Emsisoft, superantispyware and the malicious software removal tool (you should have this through automatic updates).

All these are free versions and do a good job.

You'll get some good stuff here:
