Renault R.S.16

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This thing looked a real handful today. Kudos to Magnussen and Palmer.

Oversteer, understeer, often in the same corner. Renault have their work cut out for them!

I don't think anybody really cares at Renault at this moment. The car is nothing more then a placeholder for a newly developed car next year.
Two cheap drivers, a year old Lotus, which wasn't very good to begin with with the worst engine on the grid bolted onto it.

And what those FIA stickers are for?

True
Except for this
Two cheap drivers... with with the worst engine on the grid bolted onto it
Which is very exaggerated and even bullshit.

I think Renault pay the least of all factory teams for their drivers, almost at the same level as Toro Rosso, Manor and Sauber. Their driver pairing doesn't reflect anything like a factory team. And you're right, the Honda is probably a bit worse.

The core of the problem for this car is that the chassis was designed for the Mercedes power unit - the minute they had to bolt on the Renault engine, everything became a compromise - layout, cooling, gearbox, balance, internal aero and so on.

You can see what the Renault PU can do in the hands of Daniel and Daniil over at Red Bull.

Everyone at Renault knows that this is a sacrifice season, so chill.

Palmer and Kevin are great guys - Jolyon just needs a bit of F1 experience and Kevin needs a car that he can actually drive to prove what he can do.
"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

I like Joylon (what's not to like after having Maldonado in your team), but he is simply too slow regardless of his (lack of) experience. I didnt see in any race this year a speed from him either in one lap or along race to say he is fast. I think he has everything else, his overall racecraft seems good, not many mistakes, solid head, but he lacks most important factor. I know Mag is good driver and certainly fast one, but Joylon makes him like he is another class above him in pure speed.

Chassis technical director Nick Chester said: “For the [Spanish] race we have an updated rear wing as well as some updates for the front wing.
“For the test we have a full raft of things to try; new suspension, further aero updates over various areas of the car, some mods to cooling as well as evaluating the B-spec power unit, so we should have a full two days.”
So almost B-spec car with B-spec power unit =D>

You can tell how low budget this team is based on the simplicity of their designs..
Note how the wing elements intersect with the main centre plain.

Not very refined is it?
You can compare these areas to that of the likes of mercedes and ferrari.
For Sure!!

What are those checkered stickers for, again? many teams are using them nowadays... to monitor flexibility?
They're often accompanied with a ride height sensor on the wings main plane...

Yes, they are "reference points" for the camera and then they can look at the video and compare static, vs End of Straight position (for example) and measure the deflection in mm or something (to give and example)
