2016 European Grand Prix - Baku City Circuit, Fri 17 – Sun 19 Jun

For ease of use, there is one thread per grand prix where you can discuss everything during that specific GP weekend. You can find these threads here.

I'm in awe over what we might possibly witness this weekend. I'm actually inclined to bet on an unpredictable winner (i.e. not a Mercedes). Too high is the potential for chaos.
I predict that the road crews will be quite busy at night, building last-minute chicanes as directed by Charlie Whiting, thus reducing this potentially interesting circuit to something that's worse than Valencia.

Ricciardo drives Baku on the F1 2016 game(yet to be launched).
Poor Ricciardo he is already facing some problems on that corner.

High speed and street courses don't match. Remember Palmer's shunt a few weeks ago in Monaco. That shunt broke the steering column and nose box of the car after initially going in to the barrier first and a second frontal occurred. He only had some bruises on his leg, which could have ended far worse. I would not be surprised if someone breaks a leg in a horrific crash. The circuit kind of reminds me of Surfers Paradise, a high speed street course as well. In Surfers Paradise, there were numerous freak accidents.

That's my first impression as well. Same with the high speeds, wide track and fences that scare me a little. Easy to get wheels tangles just before a braking point and start flying of a high speed spin at turn 15.

Could be low grip, combined with low downforce means a lot of nervous cars, lock-ups, cars running wide.
Long straights also means lots of high speed overtaking, especially compared to Monaco or Singapore, cars close to each other under braking, etc etc etc.

But, looks like a decent track for Williams

Small prediction: 1. HAM, 2. MAS and 3. VET

The SAFER barrier has been used in Brazil for a few years and Indianapolis from 2002 to the final GP there in 2007.

In Canada FP1 the first timed lap was 1.30.4 vs a poletime of 1.12.8. Anyone care to guess? I'm sure the first few laps will be quite cautious!
The first timed lap is never done on even some reasonable pace, let alone full speed. Although track evolution can be calculated from the fastest time in FP1 onwards.
Sorry, I should have been clearer- I was including driver evolution as they learn the track and experiment with set ups etc.

Track and driver evolution here will be huge IMO. Because they are going to start from scratch, with no data from previous years, so they will improve massively as the event progresses.

Sector 1 is all the 90 degree corners, very much like Sochi, Sector 2 is the only really unique part of the circuit with the twisty stuff, it's also impossible to pass here as it's narrow. I dislike the fact that all the fast turns can be easily taken flat out. The best corners are the very fast but not flat out corners. Like turn 11 & 12 in Australia, or turn 9 in Spain, turn 11 in Hungary, or that final left hander in Singapore, turn 5 & 6 in Malaysia. This track has no corners like that, all the fast stuff is easily flat, and anything that requires braking is taken in 3rd gear, Valencia had the exact same problem.

The narrow track and the walls may aid in slip streaming, so at least maybe we can see some crazy overtakes with cars triple towing each other.

Sorry for the pointless edits, but could this be a track where teamwork could actually help get higher positions than would otherwise be possible with clever drafting?

This will be most noticeable mid-rear field. The top teams have simulators that will give them a fairly reasonable approximation out of the box. Everyone will benefit as the tarmac develops grip and cleans up. I expect off line to be very slippery and thus will hamper overtaking throughout the weekend.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

It will be like Mexico. So much expectation and barely anyhing interesting getting squizzed out of it.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

But Marko was pessimistic ahead of the European Grand Prix saying: "The extremely long straight will not benefit us.

"Our computer simulations showed we will lose 1.2s per lap there.

"This is almost impossible to make up in the corners, though we have an outstanding car."

Despite this view, Marko is hopeful Red Bull will "be chasing Mercedes and on the same level with Ferrari" on the 3.732-mile street track.

He would be well advised to watch a Red Bull keep a Mercedes behind at Canada for a number of laps.
The engine cannot be used as an excuse anymore, whereas before at certain venues it was a valid excuse.

It's just Marko BS, again. His doctorate must be of the Disney variety....

The turn 16 through 1 section does make it interesting, because if you can stay within DRS range around the old city section, you will definitely get buy before turn 1. Heck, you could probably get buy even without DRS thanks to the huge tow the car infront will give you.

anyone think we see 380?

Turn 19 seems like a nice place to watch the race. Cars coming from the left going at full speed through turn 19. Cars from the right braking hard for turn 7.
