Massa and Raikkonen may not ultimately be up to Hamilton's level, but the chasm will never be as big as a host of other variables that faced all 3 in 2008.
The end result is that the Ferrari had 8 poles, and so did the McLaren. Therefore both as quick as the other.
But on that philosophy,
An example : 1985
Lotus 8 poles.
Williams 3
Mclaren 2
Ferrari 1
Brabham 1
Toleman 1.

Does that mean the Lotus was the best car by a country mile ? Or did the driver outdrive his car ?
Trough the years pole positions are very tricky to see how fast the cars really were. In the turbo days, BMW and Honda (to a lesser extent) had special qualifying engines, with super boost, which would freeze up or explode in 5 laps where McLaren ran more or less race engines. 1200hp in Q, 700 in the race. There was also a period where you had to qualify with the fuel you would start the race with. With a good car you could almosr choose to be on pole, but then you had to pit very early.

It's practical impossible to go faster then the car. In a well balanced car without changing conditions, most drivers can come very close to the max of a car. The good drivers excell when it's not the case.

1. A bit like yesterday, if you have a wet quali but a bone dry q2 all on SS - do the drivers start Sunday on those q2 tyres or do they get free choice come Sunday?

2. If it rains for quali so you set your car up for wet but it's dry Sunday can you change setup or are you bound by parc ferme ?
I think in this case you get a free choice but also you are bound by parc ferme conditions so no setup change.
Another dopey ruley!

Surely this is about racing and getting the cars to go fastest. IMHO they should be allowed to adjust setup.
Ah ok cool, so you could visibly see yesterday and williams very high and the red bull with even more rake - so they are stuck with that set up for the race?

roughly 580m down to turn 1 (apex) from the grid, so ~500m to the braking zone (?) it's not _that_ short

[the 835 is pixels from P1 to apex ... the 72 is pixels on the 50m bottom right]

RTL said it's 430m

I have a feeling that Nico and Lewis crash again, but one of them continues. 8)

Classic. Button drive through cause they gave him instructions on a potential imminent failure, then telling him to stay out.

I thought the penalty was "only" 10 seconds?
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

Because they told him not to shift. If they'd just told him that they'd lost hydraulic pressure and left it to him to decide not to shift would that be okay? Or would they have to say "Jenson, we've lost hydraulic pressure, pit lane this lap for further instructions"

I think they would argue that they though it would be terminal, so didn't worry too much about what thye said - the implication of what was broadcast was definitely that he would be retiring the car, and then it resolved....there appears to be no leaway in the rules for that scenario....
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Things would be so much more simple for Mercedes if they had two race strategists. Then let each side pit whenever they want.

Both Mercs should stay out for another 10 laps....Ric will be a sitting duck on 30 lap old softs.

I think Mercedes will try to stay out to lap 50 then go back on to new red soft tyres for the last 20 laps. They're quicker on that tyre anyway and even a slow stop out behind someone else they'll be on tyres that allow them to monster anyone else.

Commentators have just mentioned that Ricciardo will need to go beyond Pirelli's recommended 29 laps. 35 laps on this set if he doesn't pit.
