Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Det would be easy for them to see on a teardown though.

I have a friend with the same engine and he had the same problem!

They showed and talked about a needle roller bearing. Really? I'm not buying it.
Yup they are fools. The roller bearings would prevent the rod knock i think. At least paddy would not use that term if it was roller bearings.

If your engine is designed to run with(IOW tolerate) a certain amount of detonation you'd never know.

It'd show on the ionisation trace in the logging.

On the subject of speculation.

Lawrence Butcher speculates in RET this month's that Mercedes is using stratified charge SACI combustion.

I don't think Mercedes is using very exotic technology in their engine. Seeing how close Redbull is and how far down the other Merc teams are, the difference between engines is not that big anymore.

Because Mercedes is keeping with the same proven concept for at least 5 years now, they exactly know how far they push the engine without breaking and which mode can be run for how many laps. They is they only advantage they have left.

Interesting nugget of info there, the MGUK is "PH1.0" or Phase 1.0. Phase 1.0 will be the very first iteration of the 2016 design and shows that Merc' have not needed to make any changes to that design since (likely) late 2015, not even after initial dyno testing or winter track testing.

Thats a pretty amazing example of "right first time", I know Merc have had their reliability issues this year but that still a sign of how good the design team are. I'd love to see what Phase the MGUH is on, at a guess probably something like PH2.5 after the issues they had in the early season.

I wonder what that grey part is that, in the picture, is right above the exhause manifold. It seems to sit right in front of the turbine. Is that the MGU-h, positioned vertically?
