My F1 car according 2017 regs

Hi all,

I am really happy to share with you the start of my first F1 project. It is with the regs for 2017.
For the past few years I've followed all most all technical and aerodynamic updates in F1 paddock. This has become in to a big passion about F1 modeling. As a result I've start to learn how to model in SolidWorks.

I've start with one of the most interesting part of a F1 car - the front wing and the nose. This is only the base and it's almost finished.
It was really a lot of work, especially for non professional, like me.

Yea, it's not easy to modeling with SolidWorks but i have no experience with other platforms and I don't want to lose more time for learning another program. I would like to finish the car before the official presentations of the real cars. For now I am pleased with the results. They are far above my preliminary expectations.

How are you creating the wing geom? I always struggled with it falling apart on those sorts of sweeps?

Well I'll try to explain.
1st I read the regulations closely point by point. After every point I drew a rapper line or lines in SolidWorks. Then I get a picture where must be placed all important elements and what must be their dimensions.




A lot of careful reading is needed.
2nd - the central section. There are coordinates in the regulations of the curve of the central section. I Import the coordinates in the SolidWorks

And after that is much easier tho shape the geometry
Off course you need a lot of pictures from different angels which can help you to set your imagination.

Yeah, and a lot more.

After that is tho shape the geometry by your vision and to find the right tool which can turn your sketch in to a surface or body
The basic tools which I use are Project curves, Lofted Boss/Base, Boundary Boss/Base, Almost all surface tools

I had lots of issues with the surface geometry being really horrible, I'm doing the same in Catia.

Do you have the co ordinates you can share as point data?

You can find in internet for a reader which can convert the image to a numbers. That is what I did, to insert them more easy.

About my project.
I am ready with the first spec of the nose and the Front Wing and I am very happy with the result.
It was very interesting and sometimes a little nervous. But after all it was very entertaining.





About the modeling. Sometimes is easy, sometimes not. The good features organization is the key when you have to model such a big project.

I saw you used a quite modest outwash design. Are you thinking about the larger bargeboards requiring less outwash/flow control from the wings?

Actually no. I really have no idea how will the bigger bargeboards affect the front wing design. I make that wing without any flow simulations. Maybe when the car is finished I will run some simulations too see how is shaped the flow. Beside that I have further plans to upgrade that wing, and the upgrade is focused at increasing the outwash effect. The side endplate will be different. The hole wing will be with minimum 7 elements. But i want first to finish the car.
