I've been involved with some serious F series builds, I've also seen a lot of stock blocks making 550 wheel horse power running just under 2.4bar absolute at stock 11:1 compression reliably. Honda heads flow incredible numbers, good tuning makes all the difference. If guys in a garage can get 600 hp from some off the shelf Honda engine by tossing on parts and massaging them to make sense, I'd imagine Honda themselves could get 980+hp combined from a 1.6 V6 with their level of craftsmanship and the technology available. It's a very difficult target to achieve with the fuel limit, but the path to the goal has been lit with the frustration of the last two years.
I find the secrecy frustrating on one hand, but gives me hope on the other. It means they have something so good it's worth concealing. Honda was very open in the beginning, less open in 2016. Then again everyone is very quiet now, only revealing that they're posed to take a big step.
Only stock part left in my B series is the crank/block (is sleeved tho) and unported head (valve train not stock). Sitting at 530 whp daily driven (AC still works great). Has about 30k miles on it.
I agree about the OEM Honda motors. Great pieces of engineering and even with the fuel flow limit I think Honda will make great improvements next year. I think the token setup and the fact that I think they entered a year earlier than they wanted to gives me hope they will make great strides this year. Not that they haven't already made amazing strides given what they were up against.
