The article is almost the same

http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-su ... on-862612/

This part looks new:

"
Even though the high-tech FRIC (Front and Rear InterConnected) suspension system was effectively banned in 2014, it has not stopped some outfits finding alternative ways to improve the handling of their cars.

Mercedes in particular has been at the forefront of developing fully-legal hydraulic systems to improve the overall stability of the chassis – which helps in braking and cornering – to assist in drivers’ ability to take more kerb, more aggressive driving lines and look after tyres better.

It has been achieved through the team placing a heave (or third suspension element) behind the rocker assembly to control vertical displacement of the suspension. Such an arrangement is mirrored at the back of the car too.

The benefits of the system were clear in 2016 – as Mercedes was so much better on tyre life – and it is believed that a number of outfits were preparing similar systems that took the technology even further.

Red Bull has made great strides in the past 12 months on understanding the dynamics of its own car too, having managed to exploit once again the radical rake angles that have been so integral to its aerodynamic concept.

From Craig Scarborough:

@ScarbsTech FIA bans Mercedes trick 'energy recovery' suspension introduced mid 2016 as having primarily an aerodynamic influence

F1Womble ‏@F1Womble @ScarbsTech thought it was just in principle & discussions were still ongoing due to responses from other teams raising more questions.

Craig Scarborough ‏@ScarbsTech @F1Womble a TD has been distributed, this is as close to a rules change as you can get. So can be protested by a rival team

Alex Perry ‏@Alex148259@ScarbsTech Which teams could be most likely effected by this? RB, McLaren?

Craig Scarborough ‏@ScarbsTech @Alex148259 Merc and RBR

So what were they doing?

Generating hydraulic pressure and accumulating it using wheel movements and using it at certain set time on the entire suspension assembly without complete reference to rocker movement?

More active than passive I guess

Can't be a bad thing for Ferrari. They've effectively taken away a chunk of performance from not one but two of there biggest rivals.

Been waiting for a bit of juicy off season controversy. do we believe this is a system which the teams were already using last year? or is this just a much more aggressive version thats being outlawed. I always heard it mentioned that much of Mercedes advantage was from their suspension system. any one have any idea as to how much time such a suspension configuration could be worth? are we talking a few tenths? or 1/2 second +?

a little more details here:

From article result Mercedes and Red Bull have gotten working last year.

Question is ...................
"Suspension devices in question feature a moveable spring seat and they use energy recovered from wheel loads and displacements to alter the position of the heave spring.
How did Charlie Whiting allow a movable spring seat which allowed the alteration the position of the heave spring in the first place?
Charlie Whiting never does his job, only reacts after someone complains on an illegal system.

I thought this was widely known as McLaren hired an engineer from Mercedes that is an expert in this area / field

Edit: Might be for nothing now !!

Like as not they couldn't get it to work properly so jabbed Charlie in to action instead. Typical Ferrari really.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

The stewards decide on legality at the races, not Charlie. If no one raises a complaint then there's no reason to respond.

Charlie Whiting is the one with access to all designs and their purposes.
Stewards are not aware of internal workings of systems, they are there to check dimensions and make a ruling on complaints.
As per procedure Charlie Whiting cannot deem a device illegal but can make the complaint based on the info available

How do you expect other teams to know of illegal devices until there is a Whistler?

No, the deal never happened. Loic Serra stayed at Merc.
