Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

This season is definitely going to be really interesting for everyone. Let's see if we will start seeing the fruits of all of this work. But ye, even if in Australia the P.U makes as much power as last spec 2016 Merc PU it will be awesome since they expect a lot of potential to come after this. In Monday we will see a lot stuff.

Lighter, lower centre of gravity, Merc end of 2016 power level......i'd take that. Just the chassis left...........

While Hasegawa-san mentioned the possibility of Honda engine being on par with 2016 Mercedes engine (at Abu Dhabi) by start of 2017 season, I wonder if it will be Australia.

I think reliability will be a key factor which will decide the timing of any new parts. If the 2 tests go well then we could see more power at Australia else it could be after 5 races.

If McLaren Honda can be within a sec of Mercedes at Australia, I think that will be another big leap this winter and will bode well for rest of the season.

Looking at his micro expressions when he talks about progress, he seems quietly confident, at the same time realistic. He's happy that the engine has potential, but he's still tentative on the power unit integration with the chassis, and what that means for relative performance. A big departure, from the clear lack of confidence from Arai-San's interviews.

This alone puts my mind at ease. If they don't set good times the first week, I won't bat an eye, I'll be keeping an eye on the long runs.

Look at the edge of his lips, when he talks, when you're unsure, your cheek muscles become limp and affect the outer edges of your lips. His were tense as if trying to hide a little pride.

She's out on track for filming day!

I was worried that McLaren wasn't doing a shake down before testing.

So many changes needs as much running as you can so a morning of work will be invaluable.

Alonso at the wheel for a filming day. PU sounds different, I'm sure others will have more interesting things to say about it.

Honda has the best sound to me. Sounds like they've "added" a more Ferrariesque turbo wine.

I agree, being only 1 second off, of Mercedes will be a huge step forwards. Differences in Australia won't say that much though. The track can't be compared to any other GP on the calendar. The past has shown this. Bahrain should be a better track to see where everyone stands.

On that audio the compressor noise sounds like it's spinning down more slowly than the old engine.
The H might be driving it, or it might have quite a bit of rotational inertia, impossible to tell.
It does sound different.
