Williams FW40 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Only the aerodynamic design does not determine the performance of car, The engine and other devices (Legal and Illegal) also determine the performance. In 2014, the Ferrari SF14T had a much more aggressive design than Williams FW36 (which many people said it's just the FW35 adapted to the new rules). In addition, Ferrari had a better line-up than Williams (two world champions against two average drivers). Despite this, Williams finished ahead of Ferrari in constructors
championship.

SF14T was the infamous "aerodynamic perfomance first" car, which was designed keeping in mind the concept, that the 2014-spec cars perfomance would be depending more on the aerodynamic design and less on the PU design. It turned out that this concept was wrong. Williams beating Ferrari came down to the compatibility between the car design and Mercedes PU.

The FW-40 looks like the reborned Fw-36! Not a bad idea, considering the Fw-37 and Fw-38 design direction did not lead to the expected results.

Yeah, I have read through all your posts in the Williams them thread from Claire and also from Smedley and Simons. I read through this thread again now and after reading the opinons of co-users and readers, I thought that maybe during the last season they tried different concepts and ideas, which did not lead anywhere according do obtained data. Then Claire probably made the decision that safest idea is to design the Fw-36 to 2017 rules and hope for the best until the new employes set themselves up.

There's something going on behind the main(underwhelming) barge board.
