I think perhaps he was basing this on the comments from de la Rosa about the car looking unsettled - however final aero setup and suspension geometry adjustments are far from complete, so the current car is simply not what it will be when the race season starts. That's the whole purpose of testing! The front runners admittedly seem to have managed their setup better in early stages, hence looking more composed on track, but that doesn't sound the bell of death for McLaren's hopes.

Yes but many times those initial impressions become a real fact.

Going by the longer runs on the inters - whoever makes the right call for early slicks at a wet race this year is going to look like God himself is driving the car, the crossover gap is massive.

What are Mclaren's hopes?

Going by testing they're clearly not going to be winning any races this year. Is 4th place even at all likely? On the pace shown and reliability concerns in this test one would have to say that points finishes would be what they're hoping/aiming for?

I'm not trying to be controversial, I just don't quite get where they think they are right now and what will be a successful season for them.

Mclaren have been this bad in the first test before and then scared the hell out of people come Australia - start to worry if they're still the same in the second test.

The bolded section above is where everything falls down when trying to make predictions. You may be absolutely right in your assumptions, but you may equally be completely wrong. McLaren have stated from the outset that their aim for 2017 is to "look respectable" this year. It's not completely beyond the realms of possibility, particularly later in the year as the engine and chassis are refined.

I´m not saying that this is an excuse but it doesn´t sound quite convincent when the driver has previously stated that he wasn´t very interested in driver today.

Last time I remembered they sort of turned it around was back in 2011. Absolutely nowhere in Winter testing, but then emerged with a Red Bull diffuser and lots of other updates in Albert Park and become second fastest of the grid.

Yeah Brawn racing won the title the year they sat out the first test so drawing conclusions now is pretty pointless.

Is Kimi in race simulation? Does anyone have some lap times as for Bot/Ham yesterday?
