It's hard to tell because we don't know about engine modes and fuelling but it does seem like the US and SS tyres don't offer as much outright pace advantage over the soft as you might expect.

US, and in part SS are definitely not designed with an high lateral loads + "aggressive" tarmac track as Barcelona is..hence why the very small margin, at least IMO.. US tyres most likely get overheated after half a lap on this track (once again just speculation, I don't have the sector times to back this up)

Last year they would die before the end of the lap, i don't know if these harder ones are the same.

Biggest improvement going below soft is Massa thus far with just 3 tenths on super.

Sensor problem with Renault PU, seem like the last week Red Bull problem have.
Lost time on track is that is the bigest problem for them.

Apparently Hamilton has been struggling this morning, the car drifting a lot when putting the power down. I've noticed on the videos the Mercedes doesn't look as planted as the Ferrari or Redbull, are they in trouble???

Last year improvement on softer rubber was minimal, I'd say this year with harder compounds across the board it's be slightly higher, but nowhere near the amount when going from Med to Soft.

Pretty certain Merc spend most of their time running with very high fuel loads. I still expect them to be at the front come Melbourne.

For all the wailing about the Honda engine that new Renault unit is having a lot more problems.

Wich is not a surprise since Honda and Renault are the only manufacturers who changed their PUs significantly for this season.

Also, STR is the only team who switched PU manufacturer (Ferrari 15 -> Renault 17), and they´re suffering a lot, even more than McHonda. This is a good evidence about how important is PU-chassis integration in this era and puts some perspective on STR and McH problems. This is testing after all
