Hopefully yes. It does have a vibe of a planned change.

Why wouldn't they have started the test with it, or waited to start if the delivery was a bit delayed?

Fingers firmly crossed for reliability if they are. And also firmly crossed for a more predictable engine, given the feedback from the drivers.

Why not use it from test 1 day 1? Production delays?

I cannot see the logic behind running last years engine with a few new parts on it.

I would rather try and iron out the engine I will actually be using, than fixing the previous years spec that gives problems every 5 laps

What do they expect when they get to Melbourne with the new engine? Fast and reliable without any track testing in the car?

A Serious problem with logic in that type of thinking

If delivery was delayed, better to get some laps on the chassis with the old engine and avoid wasting the morning.

I just cannot understand that.

They basically have 2.5 out of the 8 days to test the new engine.
This with a brand new concept that even Honda said, they are a bit worried and expect problems because of the risks they had to take.

I hope this is a new spec engine, and it works.
F1 needs McLaren to do well

With lots of fuel and harder tyres the performance can be disguised.
You can validate the power unit without using 10/10ths, it's been the pattern for many years so I can't see it suddenly changing this week.

Even with lots of fuel and hard tyres, teams have access to much more detailed sector times and top speeds than get published, and they also tend to have their own observers out on track, it's harder to hide than you image. Easier just not to run it until Melbourne if you can.
It's only the same as Mclaren running with a basic floor, etc, they can get the correlations down and the car setup window defined that's more important than checking outright pace.

They are pretty quick at engine changest these days  , so they will most likely be out in about 4 hours time , so roughly an hour of running at the end?
