Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power +

Seems to come from a much lower point on the car.

Looks like it´s coming from way below the wastegate pipes though.

Edit: Set the youtube clip on it´s lowest speed and look closely. Definitely seems to originate from way below the exhaust/wastegate pipes.

Made a gif/ video that loops it. Definitely looks like near floor/gearbox but could be wind etc i guess.

Mercedes S-duct evolution

Post

Mercedes S-duct evolution - Development blog

While other teams have been busy copying Mercedes' S-duct inlets in the nose cone, the championship team itself was busy further developing its own device. The team have certainly taken inspiration from McLaren's solution of 2016, with an outlet ahead of the kink in the nose cone, and split up by the fairing around the pitot tube.

An image taken today by f1today also shows the clear evolution that Mercedes have done, making the outlet clearly a lot larger than it was on the F1 W07. On last year's car, the slot exit was located aft of the pitot tube, and quite far behind the front bulkhead as well. This year, the outlet was moved considerably further forward. This is particularly noticeable when you take into account that the pitot tube has not moved relative to the front bulkhead.

Today's image also shows how the front wishbones connect to the monocoque, with the upper ones connecting to the chassis at the highest possible point. It appears as such that the S-duct exit was made as wide as was possible while ensuring rigidity for the suspension. The steering arm enters the chassis ahead of the front bulkhead, with the steering rack also screwed onto the chassis, ahead of the front bulkhead, but protected inside a carbon fibre housing. The latter should also make a quick nose cone change easier.

Looks so composed and calm. And also just stamping on the throttle. That's been a theme since 2014 is just how hard the Mercedes drivers can get on the throttle compared to other teams.

Until I read the description, I thougjt it was just a random long run lap. Doesn't even look like he's pushing? Was he?

To my ear, the engine sounds like its not running at max, and he seems a little tardy on the up and down shifts.

Also is it just me or am I hearing some high pitch hissing noise never heard from 14' - 16' ?

So, I took this picture yesterday while on track...

Image

I know the car is rolling in the corner, but this doesn't seem right to me... The way the T-wing bends... The rear wing is dead straight but look at it. Any comments from more experienced members here? Can this be some gimmick and advantage?

Would uneven flow across the rear wing affect the load distribution across it? If that was the case - and the difference was sufficient - when the T-wing is bending and altering the flow, the loading on the tyres changes too (suspension permitting).

Please fire in if I'm wrong but in a perfect scenario, on a right-hander with the t-wing bending away from the apex, the flow would move towards the left of the rear wing... more load on the left wheel = more traction. This would effectively be traction-driven rear-wheel steering. You could induce over-steer by adjusting the flex in the T-wing and suspension response. Horrible on tyre deg though.

Possibly why there's no shark fin as that'll just limit flexion.

If you watch slow mo of the car, the t-wing wobbles quite a bit anyway. I'd say this is just a photo taken at the extreme of a wobble. The wobble has been accentuated by running over the kerb. Nothing clever or untoward, just a slender device responding to a strong lateral vibration.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

That photo was taken on the chicane, at appropriate speed for that corner, and he wasn't running over the kerbs... That's what makes it strange for me... :/
