I imagine he looked at Kimi's time and thought 'I can crack that'. His team however are probably talking him out of it.
I would like it to, was Kimi time full beans? Did he lift anywhere?
Hard to tell without the GPS data or spotters all over the track ... he might well be having an icecream whilst on that lap :D

With today SW I'm sure they can simply programmed it into the ECU where not to allow full power even if the pedal is on the floor... So the driver can drive as usually just the power output is limited to some percentage...

McLaren has confirmed that Alonso stopped with an "intermittent electrical shutdown". The same issue that Stoffel encountered yesterday

Yeah but they usually go slower in quali than they did in testing, even though they weren't fully pushing with minimum fuel in testing - it depends on other factors (weather/tyres etc.)

Still, I don't disagree that someone could probably do a 1m17 TODAY if they wanted to. But I don't think they do want to.

Well, he just set a faster middle sector and backed off, so there's still more time in the car.

On his fastest lap he was about 5kph down on Grosjean in speed trap in S2, slower than Stroll in trap in S3.
So there is more probably

He didn't drop straight back in the pits either so there was a bit of fuel onboard.

No SS here is silly.

At least they finally are bringing US to Russia (the track that needs them the most) - only they really need super mega crazy soft there.

"As he evaluated the pecking order, Hamilton said: "I think Ferrari are bluffing.

So, Ferrari is showing better times than Mercedes on the timetable, Hamilton say's they very close to them and Ferrari are the ones that are bluffing! Genius!

This is the kind of sentence that makes me dislike a driver and a team, third degree mind games.

I don't think that is right is it?
The best time from 2016 Testing on the Soft was Kimi with a 1:23.009. Hamilton qualified with a 1:22.000 on Soft.

The fly in that ointment is that for some reason they wont be using the SS in Spain.

I actually just did a quick calculation. In Barcelona, assuming sub 1:17.00 time, they would have to be within 5.4 seconds. That should be doable, even for McLaren. As far as I understand, they will just have to set that time sometime within FP. What I find more worrying; At which point might a car be black-flagged and deemed unsuitable (e.g. dangerous) to race? Imagine McLaren running the race in a detuned state in order to finish or at least get some mileage during the race? How slow would they be, especially if they are lacking top speed as a result of a detuned state?

Would that be at the discretion of the race director (Charlie Whiting)?
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II
