I really feel for the guys in the team... for the Honda guys...not so much!

is it me or is pirelli gone real conesrvative again? Not seeing much running on hard tire in barcelona
They should go softer in both Spain and Azerbaijan, the harder tire will just be a burden to the teams on those GPs.

If we make quick summary. Fastest time during preseason testing in 2016 was 1:22.765. At the moment fastest time is 1:18.634, which means that at the moment cars are 4.131 s quicker (sandbagging or not). When comparing times from 2016 to 2004 monsters, we can see, that already this year lots of times cars and drivers were quicker. This year all records will be broken and we can say that we have gladiators behind the wheels. F1 has never been so quick before than what we will be seeing this year.

Hungarian GP:
Michael Schumacher 1:19.146 (2004)
Nico Rosberg 1:19.965 (2016)

Italian GP:
Rubens Barrichello 1:20.089 (2004)
Lewis Hamilton 1:21.135 (2016)

Malaysian GP:
Michael Schumacher 1:33.074 (2004)
Lewis Hamilton 1:32.850 (2016)

Japan GP
Michael Schumacher 1:33.542 (2004)
Nico Rosberg 1:30.647 (2016)

Brazilian GP
Rubens Barrichello 1:10.646 (2004)
Lewis Hamilton 1:10.736 (2016)

Bahrain GP
Michael Schumacher 1:30.139 (2004)
Lewis Hamilton 1:29.493 (2016)

Australian GP
Michael Schumacher 1:24.408 (2004)
Lewis Hamilton 1:23.837 (2016)

Yeah but they usually go slower in quali than they did in testing, even though they weren't fully pushing with minimum fuel in testing - it depends on other factors (weather/tyres etc.)

Still, I don't disagree that someone could probably do a 1m17 TODAY if they wanted to. But I don't think they do want to.
I don't think that is right is it?
The best time from 2016 Testing on the Soft was Kimi with a 1:23.009. Hamilton qualified with a 1:22.000 on Soft.

The fly in that ointment is that for some reason they wont be using the SS in Spain.
Fair point - although I think best time in 2016 was 1:22.765. But still slower.

I did say *usually* though - take 2015: Nico did 1m 22.792s in testing but pole was 1:24.681; I think that's the usually pattern.

But this season may be unusual given expected fast rate of development.

Are these quali records for 2004 though? Remember they qualified with race fuel back then, so often went quicker in the race.

Still agree for the most part.

107% rule works on the potential basis. Not reliability. They'll look the sector times and GPS data, and if they see they could be within 107% in normal circumstances during the weekend, they'll be allowed to race for sure. So now worries on that front.

I doubt any records will be broken actually, lap records only count during a race. I get what you're trying to say though, we are bound to see the fastest outright lap times at certain circuits!

Indeed.
It's a new formula to a degree and as such I would expect the improvements for now until they return to be greater than before as they learn about it.

I know it's the flavour of the month to bash McLaren, but to suggest they're disrupting everyone's testing is ridiculous.

Red flag tally so far;
- McLaren: 4
- Renault: 3
- Red Bull: 2
- Ferrari: 2
- Williams: 2
- Toro Rosso: 2
- Haas: 2
- Force India: 1
- Sauber: 1
- Mercedes: 0

Considering all their issues, and that all 4 came in the last 2 days because of the same electrical issue, it's not as bad as it appears.

Over the course of the Testing weeks, McLaren have broken down more times than that I am sure

Nope, that's the only times they broke down. Despite all the PU issues, they've always made it back to the pits. Like I said, the hype surrounding McLaren right now are magnifying the issues, making them seem worse than they actually are. I'm not saying it's not bad, because it is. I still reckon it's gremlins rather than fundamental problems.

Yes, but this doesn't look that good (the number of laps teams have done during the tests):

Mercedes: 1114
Ferrari: 864
Sauber: 729
Williams: 715
Force India: 685
Haas: 662
Red Bull: 625
Renault: 534
Toro Rosso: 469
McLaren: 399

And this one is for the engines:

Mercedes: 2414
Ferrari: 2255
Renault: 1628
Honda: 399

Absolutely, the mileage has been horrendous. My point was simply to suggest that McLaren breaking down as being disruptive to others is ridiculous.

Just annoying to see the once technical and interesting chat of this forum slowly being replaced with nonsense and trolling. :|

Of course! It's not like they're doing it on purpose. I'm sure all members here would like to see a trouble-free session for McLaren-Honda, but that's not happening and they're all frustrated.
