2005 Novelties

Post

Here is the first thread of this kind

Mc Laren introduced in 2005 the famous NO KEEL chassis and the VIKING HORNS

Image
In 2005 the FIA once again raised the front wings outer tips and again the emphasis on the obstruction behind the wing was a higher priority. McLaren were having already run very drooped front wishbones were able to devise a better layout for the front of the car.The team managed to mate the wishbones directly to the chassis . This is a stiffer lighter set up and also creates the free space under the nose so as to improve the nature and speed of the airflow under the body of the car .

Since then many teams copied the no keel design and in 2007 all the team's chassis ( except Renault) and in 2008 are keel-less .

Image

Image
Their purpose are to divert and guide airflow towards the rear wing to increase downforce

Since then only BMW F1.06 – 2006 season , F1.07 – 2007 season and F1.08 – 2008 winter testing and Honda RA108 – 2008 winter testing copied them . Mc Laren dropped them since mid 2007 season .

Yes , the Keel-less description and the drawing is from Scarbs .

Toyota TF104B in 2004 was a single keel Car . Toyota TF106 and TF106B in 2006 were the first keel-less chassis the team ever made .

Sorry I meant the TF105B. That was the first toyota zero-keeled car.

That is partially correct because the single keel was not disapeared in TF105B as it should be . The first really keel-less Toyota was TF106B in 2006

The very first front wing with a full upper element, the Sauber C24

Image

(Hope I'm not wrong, the design was never raced and the first front wing like this to be raced I believe was the BAR at either Spa or Suzuka along with the first of the sidepod shields that we are used to today, I think.)

I think that the very first team to use a front wing with an upper element was Prost AP04 2001 in Monaco GP . Ferrari F2001 tested it before Prost but never used it in 2001 .

In 2005 Renault introduced a revised keel arrangement, dubbed the V keel, this was effectively a single keel layout but the usual solid shape of the keel was altered for a hollow “bracket” this freed up some airflow and also the keels shape was more structurally efficient, making it lighter ( by Scarbs )

This feature helps to provide better management of the airflow directed to the rear of the car and to reduce side wing influence especially when turning. Since then almost every team adopted a similar feature and Red Bull RB4 in winter 2008 testing introduced a huge one

In regards to the TF105B, that car was a development of the TF105 mainly in its suspension geometry. The team had changed from attaching the lower wishbones to the monocoque instead of to the keel. However, strangely they did not remove the keel until the next season.
In all the struggling history of Toyota, I consider this actually a highpoint. It was in the midst of their problematic seasons and such design philosophy certainly did not help.

A novelty in 2005 are also the mass dampers as introduced by Renault. They ran them in Brazil after getting approval from the FIA. Then they were controversially banned as of Hockenheim 2006

Thanks Scarbs ,
Here is one not included in the list

Image
To increase downforce at Monaco ,Toyota mounted extra winglets using tiny pillars on top of the main front wing profiles. Their purpose was to add front-end sharpness to the car on entry to corners . It was the first time that T-Winglets were spotted away from the main body of the car . Since then the desigh was abandoned and never used again .

1995 Novelties

1995 Novelty...

MP4-10 was an interesting car. Look at the shape of the engine cover, now look at the Red-Bull picture

Image Image
Anyone can tell me which year is that Red-Bull?

More info at: http://www.f1technical.net/f1db/cars/771

I haven't been able to find more about this car, although I remember reading it didn't go well for McLaren that year.

You can also see a first glimpse of the viking horns in the MP4-10 (called by somebody as the ugliest Macca ever).
Anyone has more insight on the car?
