2006 Novelties

Post

In 2006 the free spirit of F1 engineers were also very creative . FIA new rules always are followed by new fresh ideas .

REAR VIEW MIRRORS
Image
Ferrari was the first team to mount the mirrors away from the cockpit in 2006 so as to reduce drag . The mirrors are now covered partially by the front wheels . This trend was followed by some teams in 2007 and 2008. Some teams even developed this idea by supporting them on the sidepod vanes (Renault R27 , Toyota TF108)

FRONT WHEEL RIM SHEILD
Image
Ferrari also introduced front wheel rim sheilds in Bahrain GP as a part of their front braking cooling system .Ferrari's brake cooling system has two main parts - an inner drum (in yellow) where cool air (blue arrows) enters, and an outer part where heat from the brakes (red arrows) is expelled . Since then the project developed a lot and extended to the rear wheels as well . Almost all the teams in 2008 use front&rear wheel rim sheilds

BMW Sauber F1.06 first tested nose cone twin towers ( around 40 cm high ) in Jerez 4-7-2006 test .Their purpose was to improve stability and efficiently direct airflow towards the central and rear sections of the car . They were first used in French GP 2006 but FIA banned them since then .

I think the reintroduction of pylon-mounted rear wings was in 2006...

sorry friend , it was in 2005 by Toyota (single pylon) and by Honda ( double pylons ). I will post these novelties in a few days in the 2005 novelties thread

My mistake. I was running through a bunch of pics of the '05 cars but missed those, thanks bar!

does it also not generate downforce ? I think so...say, at corners, at a slip angle these vertica structures must be acting at a slight angle to the flow and thus might create force components in downward direction as well.. ! Pretty similar to Mclaren airbox horns, though at a lesser angle of attack !

Heres my list of key novelties...

Mass dampers (all bar Toyota, McLaren)

Fins on brake duct front and rear (Ferrari and BMW)
Lower RWEP slots (Ferrari and then Renault)
Hockey stick cockpit fins (Honda)
Renaults fin on the Front top wishbone
Front wing cascades and Renaults bi plane element
Pod wings really took off
Multiple vanes around the rear edge of the bargeboards
Longitudinal fences alongside the front splitter (Mac, Williams)
Flexi floors were first spotted (Ferrari)
Super Aguris relentless development of the old Arrows (updated aero, zero keel etc)

Thanks SCARBS ,
i would add
Mc Laren's shark tail fin
Renault's Image rear wing
Ferrari's movable front wing biplane

I am planning to add an image and a small explanation for each one of them .

MC LAREN MP4/21 SHARK TAIL FIN
Image
The tail fin is actually more to do with the cross section of the rear impact structure and the flow coming up and around it from the diffuser.
The flow out the back of an F1 car is near vertical, the open top of the diffuser is beneath this fin. The diffuser flow joins the upwards flow through the rear wing. Thus a more aerofoil\teardrop shape to the crash structure eases the flow around the structure (by Scarbs)

I wonder how they call this device at Ferrari since the way you describe it would be a clear breach of the regulations.

It was, and was disalowed after the Malaysian Grand Prix from memory. It was the upper plane of the front wing being allowed to pivot on its joint to the endplate. (It wasn't attatched to the nose at this time.)

FERRARI 248F1 MOVABLE UPPER FRONT WING PROFILE
Image
The upper profile of Ferrari’s 248F1 front wing in Bahrain and Malaysia was bending downwards at speed, opening up a gap between the wing element and the nose cone . In theory this design should help push back the car's centre of aerodynamic pressure. This means the rear would run closer to the ground, increasing the available downforce created by air passing underneath. Furthermore, the front end would become slightly more understeery - and hence controllable - at high speed .
Image
For Australia reinforcements have been applied where the upper wing profile meets the nose, making for a more rigid connection because the other teams complained to FIA .
