F1 2017 Tyre Drag Estimation

Hi , i'm new on this forum Guys. I would like to cooperate with some who can design a pirelli tyre i can do then simulation with CFD . we would like to estimate how much drag these tyres cause and i also would like to know if there's some new approaches to reduce that drag (Blown wheel hubs, FW ...) Thank you

It's entirely dependent on the flow structures the car sets up.
The problem is you're not going to know the carcass layup for distortion at speed so that may need to be eyeballed as an estimate on whichever car your wanting to model at a representative speed.

I mean you could do a super simple "drag over a cylinder" calculation...
I doubt this is what the OP is after though

Dimensions F1 Tyre:
Front: 305mm wide * 670mm high
Rear: 405mm wide * 670mm high

Assuming:
Cd(Cylinder) = 1.21
rho(air) = 1.225 kg/m^3
v(car) = 300km/hr = 83.33m/s

D = 1/2 * (rho * A(c) * Cd * v^2 )
D= 1/2 * (1.225 * [0.305*0.670] * 1.21 * 83.33^2)
D = 1052N
D = 1.05kN @ 300km/hr

D = 1/2 * (rho * A(c) * Cd * v^2 )
D= 1/2 * (1.225 * [0.405*0.670] * 1.21 * 83.33^2)
D = 1396.6N
D = 1.40kN @ 300km/hr

I don't think blown hubs and a front wing will help much with that drag

Hi ,Thank you Vyssion for the calculations. In fact those calculations may be used for static tyre ,that doesn't rotate.
and you're neglecting a lot of phenomenons (e.g Magnus effect, Blown hubs,perturbed air from the back of the car in front etc..) . But i do appreciate a lot what you did

I know mate - that's why I said "super simple calculation". You asked for an "estimation" of tyre drag before you would then go away and do your CFD; so I "estimated"

He said estimate, not get a super accurate answer. That's why he's doing the CFD
