Pretty interesting to see them developing around the RW so much. They're the only team doing that. And why not? It makes a big % of total downforce, and the regs opened up the free spaces around the endplates. Ferrari went for diffuser development, McLaren went for RW development.

Their endplates are effectively smaller and allow more air to pass under the wing. Particularly in yaw, there would be less "shadowing" on the leeward side of the endplate compared to flatter, solid endplates. Surely this improves the efficiency of the wing.

Is there a downside? A drag tradeoff which explains why the other teams haven't used similar features?

Afaik it reduces drag. And you dont want to introduce air under the wing, at least not to improve downforce as you are introducing ambient pressure to low pressure

why do they do it so much with the diffuser then? high noses were to get as much air under the car as possible. a lot of the bargeboards we see serve the purpose of getting air to the back under the diffuser, the floor slots, like the one on the McLaren, again, guide air under the diffuser to make it work harder. why can't they do it to the rear wing as well?

If airflow and velocity are kept up via these endplate inlets, this should accompany a pressure drop, no? Sort of like the FW endplate vortices. Compared to a solid endplate which might stall somewhere along its length.
