Managed to capture quite a few fast laps today:

Mercedes is clearly unsettled, they will for sure improve a lot tomorrow. Remember ferrari's friday woes in hungary and the resurgance on saturday, it can be done.
Thanks a lot for the vids. I couldn't watch the practices, these are very much appreciated.

Is it just me, or did the Red Bulls throw up sparks almost continuously on fast laps while the Mercs almost never did?
I guess that's the difference between running your car flat or pointing it down to the floor!

It's about how soft you run the rear suspension. Based on a statement from Lewis in Canada, their suspension is quite stiff, due to their low rake philosophy, which makes the car doesn't squat as much as Red Bull, who obviously have a bigger rake and can afford larger vertical movement (the more the car sits at the rear, the more it helps on straights and they only need a good rake for venturi in yaw and you would see Red Bull's pronounced rake in corners). The stiffer the suspension is, the harder it works the tyres and that is why the W08 doesn't like Ultra Soft and goes merrier on Softs.

I think people need to settle down about Friday times, it's just practice, calm down dear

Vettel looked nowhere in Singapore practice and he put it on pole.

And now the deluge of reasons why this is different...

I still think Ferrari has a slight edge here, and not bad from Alonso at all, that new floor on the McLaren helped. Cars are bloody fast around here, we may see a low 29 on pole.

Huh? He was 2nd fastest in FP1 in Singapore and in FP2 his quickest time wasn't representative, but on the hot lap that he wasn't able to complete, he looked to be on par with the RedBulls and definitely faster than Mercedes. On top of that, long run suggested that Ferrari was indeed the strongest (source: AMuS). I suggest you go read up on the Singapore topic again. The only thing that had a big question mark about Vettel, Ferrari and Singapore was if RedBull might indeed pip them to pole. That pace Vettel then demonstrated in QF was quite something indeed, but the performance relative to Mercedes was never in dispute.

UPDATE:
AMuS reports that Mercedes may have gone wrong with their new updates and that that may be the cause of their huge performance loss. They go on to explain that the engineers noted extremely high tire temperatures and that they were losing big time in T5, T6 and T12. They seem to think that they got something seriously wrong, either set-up related or with the updates or both. At this point, who knows - they may well revert the car to the last spec for tomorrow, depending if they find something in the data that might explain their lack of performance.
On the other hand, the updates Ferrari have brought seem to work quite well.

Their short analysis (based on very limited runs by the team) suggest that Ferrari are very strong, Kimi bit in the longrun, Vettel in the one-lap pace and that Dan Ricciardo had very impressive consistent times. This is the gist of it.

I can't believe Merc is suddenly this much slower. Tomorrow I fully expect Hamilton to battle for pole.

Merc were way off the pace in FP2 in Azerbaijan. Sorted it out for FP3.

That said, the car was definitely suffering from all sorts of balance problems.

I wonder if they were using the old Spec 2 PUs used for Singapore in FP1 and FP2? A heavy fuel load, a fundamental setup problem, and old asthmatic PUs could've really contributed to poor pace.

Are Merc's upgrades to blame for getting the setup wrong? Bit of sandbagging? All of the above? FP3 is going to be telling.

Looking at Bottas' onboard I have the feeling it's understeering quite alot. Look at how much steering lock he needs to apply.

Well judging by the times going on, the main issue was Mercedes updates not working in the slightest and actively making them slower. From what I can tell(not paying too much attention) Hamilton is now top of the time sheet on the old aero spec and Bottas is half a second down on the new spec.... though that in itself may not be too telling as Bottas often seems to be a fair distance behind Hamilton.

If they retain the new/old aero spec for qualifying and the race the gap there might be more telling as maybe the gap is less in qualifying than it's been in qualifying between Ham and Bottas, as Ham has always seemed to find an extra 2-3/10ths he keeps in his pocket for Q3.

Well pay more attention, Bottas is ~0.5s behind and Ham another couple tenths behind him.
