Why was the spec 4 planned for Suzuka, just simply to have a fresh engine at that track ? Or are they holding it back as long as possible as they are not happy with the spec 4 ?
Or maybe it's because it was the best place to introduce it from a mileage point of view. The fact they had it available already in malaysia makes me wonder if the plan was to run FPs with the old one and then switch to new from quali onwards.

Looking at the onboards, mercedes have gained ~10 kph trough turn 5/6 from yesterday - almost on ferrari level, but still look a bit out of control in some other places.

They are only changing the ICE. Nothing else. I thought the whole PU was normally designed as 1 when they bring a new spec engine

I asked that as well. I understand it as you do and that at least the Turbo and ICE are designed as a pair.

How does a new ICE and and a Turbo designed for an older spec ICE work to maximum potential? Surely if a new spec ICE has been designed to work with an old spec Turbo then doesn't that mean it's been designed in an unusual situation.

That last corner looks horrible to drive, the camber is awful.

Seems to me Bootas will take the updates and setup the car more towards qualy and a 3 stop race in order to keep Vettel in his mirrors and Lewis will go conservative for an old car and a strategy with a 2 stop race and protecting the rear tyres ...
Lewis strategy is wiser but most of all is a quicker one in race trim than Bottas` one ...

Surely not now FFS and where has this Merc speed on the softs come from?

On reply sounds like the Turbo popped.

Could be a chance if it rains tomorrow. And they could introduce a full new engine pack if they can't fix it in 6 minutes....

Sounded bad on the onboard. Will they be able to change the turbo without a grid penalty if you're starting last.

Is it worth vettel changing all PU components before the race so he doesn't have penalties at upcoming races?
