FIA allowed small wings to be added to the halo for AERO effect, but I thnik the main reason was to find a way to make the HALO look less ugly, and what I can say is from this first example is that it will look even more ugly at the end, when teams will have this crazy little wings around the halo

Looks like a solution to either keep the airbox sufficiently fed with air, or to keep airflow going rearwards attached on the bodywork. Interestingly, this will create lift (and a small amount of drag as well) and therefore will rob aerodynamic performance on its own. The impact of the halo must be substantial to consider this.

Would the halo be better if the middle bar went up to the air box instead of down the nose.
Wouldn't affect vision that way and a wheel is unlikely to land perfectly side on to slot in the gap while the head would gain even more protect.
Driver could then crawl out via the front and sides if it was upturned.

When did they test that? As far as I can see Turvey is in the McLaren today?!

This topic will be merged with the 2018 regulatory aerodynamic changes thread. I'll leave the topic here for a short while so everybody can notice this message.

they should not be allowed to add to the halo anything extra only makes it look worse and harder to get out. i would only allow them to paint it.

that wing looks like it snap if the driver had to use it as a handle

Some of the appendages will help the car and some will help the driver. They will want to ensure that a turbulent flow doesn't hit the top of the helmet, for example.

To make the Halo look less ugly, why didnt the FIA just make it look less ugly themselves and then tell the teams that no changes are allowed. Dumb FIA yet again.

We are blessed with awsome looking cars that are super fast. And with Bad Stewards, Ugly Halo's and Naff Logo's its no better than the ugly dogs of 09.

Possible purpose of those little flaps/fins on top of the halo is to reduce vortex shedding. The halo cross section is close to perfectly circular and this might cause lots of unstable vortex shedding, where the frequency depends on the x-section diameter and airspeed. It could mess with the driver's helmet, the airbox inlet, etc.

As for the negative rater, why not just message me and tell me that you dont agree with what i say. Instead of hiding behind the rating system.

"the legs" of the HALO have different shape, looks like Sauber has it flattened

Mclaren & Force India have tubular legs, but Mclaren add some aero fins
