Official 2009 Regulations with sources/references?

Post

Hey all,

I've been reading a lot about the 2009 rules because I am doing CFD on a theoretical 2009 car as the second part of my thesis. so far i've heard a lot of speculation, but not enough facts or sources. So, let's get a list of the 2009 rules changes WITH SOURCES so we can get a comprehensive list. As people post, I will list the rule in this original post with the source on where it came from.

I'll get it started:

2009 Technical regulations, December 2006 http://fia.com/sport/Regulations/f1regs.html

Obviously there has been talk about a lot of changes since then, so lets get them included in this thread. Are they media speculation, or did they come from the FIA themselves?

The regulations posted in 2006 are completely out of date.
The rule published on the FIA site are proposals until the season starts.

For instance here those regulations were from 2005 GPMA/FIA talks and have no validity at all regarding the changeS.

You can send Max Mosley a fax telling him to provide a better service for the public. I did it and now I have a letter telling me that he passed the issue to the appropriate department. #-o the burocrate warming his seat there hasn't done anything. perhaps he wakes up if Max gets more letters.

That's all true, and there are other figures I've seen you post (80cm rear wing, etc.) but I don't know the sources on that. Where did you find that info, etc?

It was published by members of the OWG last year and at several times technical directors confirmed the directions.

an interview with rory bryne during an A1GP race gives also a lot of info and confirms the measures.

The technical directors agreed to proposals which are as follows:

- Front wing width increased to 180 instead of 140 cm.

- Front wing height decreased to 7.5 instead of 15 cm.

- The middle section over a width of 40 cm has to be a standard part.

- The driver may adjust the front wing flaps from the cockpit twice a lap by an angle of a maximum 6 degrees.

- Rear wing width 75 instead of 100 cm

- Rear wing height 95 instead of 80 cm.

The diffusor then starts from the centre of the rear axle rather than from the front end of the rear wheels. It may raise to 17.5 instead of 12.5 cm. The bodywork has to be clean. That means no barge boards, no winglets, no chimneys, no flipups.

Windtunnel research has shown that with the new rules the overall downforce loss will be 50 percent compared to the 2006 aero. If you follow another car within half a car length you will only lose 25 instead of 46 percent of the downforce and the balance shift will be 1 percent to the front rather than 4 percent to the back as it is now

it is not said anywhere but aparently tracks remain the same and wheels remain the same. the KERS part of the FIA 2009 tech rules will be inplemented. slick tyres will be provided unless the objectives of the FIA are missed. I don't think we have much better write up anywhere.

Damn, I've been looking for sources on the rules, and I cannot find any!

Autosport doesn't have much on them, and I can't find any of the technical interviews where they specifically mention actual parts of the rules (like the 80cm rear wing, for example.)

Anyone else have better success?

One caveat on the "rules" posted by WhiteBlue: the web site attributes the source as
According to our spies in Brazil
Doesn't mean those aren't the rules, but . . .

Sorry, I meant to thank WhiteBlee (and others) for the effort to get out the rules in whatever form or detail to the rest of us.

And WHY is it so darned hard to get this info from some sort of official source?

I'm guessing they are between revisions right now (even though it's been 2 years!) and wont put anything up until finalised, totally.

I want to see a concept from the manufacturers of what the cars should look like. Just a 3D CAD model!

AeroGT3: you should check the topic on autosport i created, read posts from either me or AFCA, you'll see interviews of team directors confirming some point of the rules.

Ogami Musashi, that is a very long thread which lately deals more with 2013/2011 engine specs. Thanks for posting it but I still think the short version posted somewhere up is the best we can do at the moment. When I faxed the FIA with a question for the updated 2009 regs I got a reply from Max saying he delegated it to the department concerned. It looks more people should swamp the FIA with complaints about the sloppy way they handle the public info on this subject.

I was answering AeroGT3 who was looking for sources and confirmation for the post from automoto365.

In this post if you search through my posts or AFCA ones you have many interviews confirming the facts.
