Top speeds for today from F1Today, not sure Honda & Renault have quite caught up on the power front

1. Vettel 291.1
2. Stroll 291.1
3. Perez 288
4. Hamilton 288
5. Leclerc 286.4
6. Magnusen 284.9
7. Bottas 284.9
8. Ericsson 283.4
9. Gasly 282.7
10. Alonso 282.7
11. Vandorne 281.9
12. Sainz jr 279.7
13. Sirotkin 279
14. Verstapen 274.8
15. Hülkenbrg 273.4
Also has to do with how efficient the car is with the aero/drag situation no? Not just PU?

I’m not really reading anything into it at this stage, but all Mecr/Ferrari cars are at the top & all Renault/Honda cars at the bottom (albeit only 10k down) irrespective of chassis maker

It’s interesting because Gary Anderson was saying the Ferrari was still somewhat raked in the corner, reducing its top speed.

Could just be whatever each engine manufacturer has specified for maps to run for testing data. We can see on the Williams thread that they're not even running complete internal covers yet so they've obviously got more speed to come.

Those are likely the start/finish line traps, which will show what car is better out of the last corner. James Allen has some speeds posted on his website for the end of the straight, which he says is more indicative of power:
Pierre Gasly (above) cracked out 147 laps in the Honda powered Toro Rosso, indicating that the Japanese are well on with their reliability work compared to a year ago. The Honda was also fourth fastest through the speed trap at 333km/h.

One thing that was immediately noticeable was the Renault powered cars down near the bottom of the (end of straight) speed trap, with Hulkenberg and Verstappen slowest on 313km/h, Vandoorne on 316.

Magnussen was fastest on 336, Vettel 334 with Hamilton on 333.

Well the good news from today is lap count for the teams we were worried about 4 days ago.

All engine manufacturers have gained decent mileage.

I suspect the pace will ramp up significantly next test in warmer conditions and the shift towards performance runs.

So even whit Renault PU tuned down for reliability RB and Mclaren and Renault pretty fast.

Everyone is running to safer parameters and can turn the wick up. Look at the speed figures from F1today and its clear that at that point they are about same speed (280). The reduced top speed suggests high downforce setup (more drag).

Just going back to the tyres- is it palpable to suggest that the Mediums could genuinely perform better than the softer options in these cold conditions?

Those of you with tyre knowledge and understanding can help me out here!

Obviously keen to understand whether the suggested Pirelli tyre delta guides would hold true in these winter conditions or not.

(Like you all, just trying to compare some of these lap times and know whether it’s even worth it)

I'd like to know that as well. I do remember the soft last year, more or less the current medium tyre, had a wider operation range than the other tyres. Maybe it has to do with that.

That's my guess turbo. The wider range is probably easier to get them working respectably in the cold.

Last year Pirelli deliberately designed the mediums to have both a wider operating range and a lower temperature at which they became usable as a bit of a 'catch all' compound they could take anywhere they were sure of - it's reasonable to think they may well have done the same.

he doesn't want/need a major sponsor because he doesn't want to change the team name.
this sounds like a rationalization, a sponsor is a sponsor is a sponsor, the bigger the logo, the bigger the $ and for the entirety of time that Ron had been back they were looking for a title sponsor, that would also bring title sponsor money. The side of the car is left clean because at this point with the absence of Honda $, they desperate.

The livery alone has been getting them tons of media coverage.
You think that will last an entire season? If they don't look like they'll compete for victories by the time they get back to Europe this year, I fully expect the Kimoa logo on the side of the car, really really big as a way to keep Alonso happy.

Global test conclusion after week 1 :

concidering both Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault all have 3 teams, and Honda just 1, it's rather positive to see three hundred something laps from Honda. if you'd multiply that by 3, then compared, ToroRosso-Honda has more laps than their competition. Or, should you devide the other manufacturers by 3, then they have two hundred something each team, which means Honda is putting in more laps than the competition - right?

after last season, that is definately good news, also since they're not bottoming out the timing sheets, and their topspeed is also great.

So that means we can finally get positive about what we're seeing with Honda, which is very good news.
